I’ve read threads on this. Brakes worked fine, was in reverse and had to brake hard, now the abs light is on. Brakes work seems like I am in fail safe mode. I understand that this means the system is basically manual, but safe to drive? I’m traveling and pretty far from home.

If you can find a short piece of wire nearby, you can skip the "drive carefully to the closest dealer" part and just get the trouble codes, by putting the wire between the Tc and CG terminals of the car's diagnostic port, turning the car on, and counting the blinks of the dash lights. A quick search here can find you many threads with the rest of the details on that.
