I noticed issues in February and it became undriveable by mid May.
I have 174k miles on it.

Your 174k is a good run! We love our Priuses. My 118k feels premature for full battery failure. I’m going to let the dealer run a diagnostic check and hope it’s a minor repair for now

    @Kate M
The battery is 15 years old.
It is definitely not premature for it to be wearing out.

I can't think of any other batteries used around the house that last 15 years.

Took my 2005 with almost 119k miles to the dealer today with intention of leaving it for diagnostic testing.
Talked with the service technician, then he took it for a test drive.
His report: Engine a bit “loud” but not unusual. Easily got up to 80 mph on the freeway. Battery level went down but came back up in good time. Checked oil level after test drive and was good. Since no warning lights have come up yet he said running diagnostics on their computer wouldn’t provide any information.
Based on my limited understanding, it seems the car is ok for now. Am I missing anything? Thanks.

looking at your other thread, i think you are right back where you started. you feel like something is different, and you're concerned, but you don't have any codes and the mech doesn't feel anything besides a loud engine.

I’m so psyched - I missed Prius! Just picked her up after a brand new hybrid battery install, oil change and tire rotation. ( those last two were due this month).

By the way, I was mistaken—the $400 was for 60k mile service. Have no idea what I paid for new 12V because I can’t locate a receipt. I think one of my husband’s towing clients installed it quid pro quo.

The battery itself was $1950, then $645 labor. then there's some tax on top.I know everyone will say the labor is high, and it likely was, but I don't have someone I can ask to do the swap and I don't have the time luxury to be without my car while i'm looking for a qualified mechanic. The dealer has a two year warranty on service and parts, though I'm sure a new battery is good for 100K+ miles, but I do plan to sell it and want the dealer warranty and receipt to show a prospective buyer.

So I found the 12v self-check (mine passed). Computer says average mpg is 38. How is that calculated? My hand calculation for last 6 gallons: 21, 21, 47, 29, 21, 50. Feels dismally low, even with AC running. What am I missing here?

    hi kate,

    couple things:

what reading did you get on the 12v?

average mpg is a computation of gallons used divided by miles driven. it is typically 5% higher than what you would manually calculate at the pump. but since your car has a rubber bladder inside the gas tank, and doesn't fill the same amount every time, manual calculations are best kept track of for long term averages.

how are you arriving at your hand calculations?

best to fill the tank, reset the trip meter (average mpg) drive until there are two bars of gas left, refill and do the calculation. rinse and repeat for 5 or 6 tanks, see how they compare and average them ll together for the best accuracy.

you may want to start your own thread, describing your issues again so everyone has a good look at what you're experiencing.

there are a lot of smarter people than me here at priuschat ;)

That's the thing about hybrids... the battery has a use it or lose it lifetime. No refund for under-utilization during that timeframe.

—okay, I’m overwhelmed with that, but makes sense. Learning as I go...
Just discovered the fuel consumption screen (yes, I never knew about it). So I’ll be trying to figure that out.
