2005 Prius Rebuild or Replace Battery

    You will not be able to return your core before picking up the battery.

    There are specific items supplied by the dealer (in their shipping crate) that you must incorporate into your pack before you return your pack.

    Also, you do not want to accidently turn in parts of your core that you need to place into the new pack. Very easy to accidently leave something on your core that you will need later. If you return it with your core the dealer may send the pack back before you can retrieve the necessary part.

    I suppose you could finish disassembly/swaping parts in a parking lot very near the dealership. Then quickly return to the dealership with the appropriately packaged/labled core. That would minimize the time they had your core fee to just a few hours. Although the still may hang onto the core fee until they fully inspect your pack. Sometimes even a few days.

    When I do it I set them side by side.
    First I strip the old parts from the old pack.
    Then the parts that need to be transferred.
    Then add the new parts.
    Wrap up old pack harness and tape it.
    Install dealer supplied shipping parts.
    Close up old pack. Close up new pack.
    Appropriately label old pack for Toyota's records.

    That makes sense. Is there a list of what they expect or do we just put everything in that we disconnected?

    I also like that we could sell our current modules on ebay to recoup some of the battery expense. If at some point in the future, we needed to turn the core in, would it be a problem that our 2005 case was full of 2013 modules?

    I edited my previous reply since you replied. Sorry.

    There have been reports of dealer's now refusing cores that don't have the correct parts in them. So it's up to you whether or not to take the chance.

    I have not run into it yet. Only time will tell, I suppose.

    Dealers don't care about the modules inside, they just have to be all Toyota parts. It would be great if you get to sell your old modules and recoup half of the $1000

    E learnaid selling modules only? No case?

    There are 3 cells that don't match the case already put there by the previous owner. I will ask the dealer if that is a problem before we order so I won't be caught off guard.

    I wouldn't count on it, but it does seem a likely possibility

    I think the case is an option if I wanted to pay more in shipping. As it stands, he's offering to send the modules for free. Plus a filter for the battery fan.

    There have been reports of dealerships refusing to return the core fee, even with Toyota modules in it.

    The latest case was someone with Toyota modules that did not match due to prior repair.

    As I recall, the dealer's refusal was also backed up by Toyota customer service. To me that was the most worrying aspect of the story.

    You really don't need the extra case, modules will probably be shipped in 2 priority mail flat rate boxes.

    This really sounds pretty good, even junk yards want this price for older modules and they want a core back. Just got to make sure his modules are from 2013, but this person sounds ligit.

    For 2013, the serial number on the 4th digit should be letter O and P for 2014

    The fact that customer service is backing it up is the foreboding part.

    I'm still not certain the right information was provided. I still think they were under the assumption the battery does not contain OEM modules

    I searched his business on the forum and mostly see good reviews of the 12 volt batteries he sells. It's just the unknown of used battery life that makes me hesitate.

    You are correct there are many unknowns but one thing should be certain is the serial number showing it's from 2013. 5 years old modules should still be pretty decent.

    Take into consideration your car's age and mileage, it's only worth about $3000

    HopeulHop that was a one off.
    Perhaps they used the verbiage for a WARRANTY return.

    Looking through some documents I find on line don't seem to indicate they are checking serial numbers of batteries.

    I'll ask him to send pictures. When I talked to him earlier today, he said he was just picking them up this afternoon so he didn't have them listed already. He says he tests the modules. I expect to get something similar to this:
    Hybrid battery with Gen 3 modules for Prius 2004 to 2015

    We bought it for $2400 and then put another $300 into the catalytic converter (we knew this was an issue when we bought it) so we didn't do too badly.

    Yes I completely understand for warranty return, and that's where the information gets weird. Someone at the dealer is following those guidelines when he's buying a battery at the parts counter

    The site says you get $200 discount too. But it shows sold

    Sylmar is about an hour from me

    I provided that link because it gave more information about his warranty, process, etc. It's not the one he was describing to me. The one he was telling me about was a 2013 (3 years newer than that listing) and 83,000 miles (instead of 89,000).

    Here in Southern California, junk yards want $800 to $1000 plus a core for original packs.

    $500 plus a core for rebuilt batteries (module swaps).

    This person selling without wanting a core, that's different for a "business".

    There's no way to verify the mileage on these used modules or where they were in service. Just gotta take the risk
