I purchased a 2005 Prius II as a project car. I knew it needed a battery. I replaced the 12 volt, car will not start. Get into the car and the car with a key is blinking. Car still won’t start. Test the 12 volt battery it’s on the low side of good at 12.52 Volts, test the traction battery 225 volts. Try to put the car into “READY” mode and I get no dash lights just 5 boxes on my dash- 3 in one row and 2 with a space in between in the next row all the way to the right side.

I replaced the batteries 2032 in the key fobs, it is an SKS enabled car. I have tried starting the car with both the key in proximity and the key in the key slot.

I have ordered Techstream - it should be here tomorrow, any advice on which machine or specs to run the techstream on or what could be going on with this car?

You probably messed with the orange interlock on the hv battery.

You have to lock it back in place to start the car. To lock it, just press the thing down towards the floor...You'll hear it click. Then start your car

This is my second project with the Prius, I did check the orange safety lock before posting and trying to start the car. I took it out and reinserted it. No dice. Any other ideas?

You should start checking fuses. Has this car ever started in your possession?

You inserted in....but did you push it down to lock it? It's another step

Yes into to the back, lift up, push down until it clicks.

No, it has not. I’ll check the fuses tomorrow.

If this car never started in your possession, it'll be a hell of a project.

It could be a number of different things, wrong key, bad battery, bad transaxle, bad fuses.

    Good luck with it

Thank you, if it were a bad transaxle wouldn’t I have dash lights saying there is a problem? I’m thinking it’s a low 12 volt battery. That’s my prayer anyways.

    12.52v should not be a 12v problem.

Any history on the car? Why do you feel it needed a hv battery on your OP?

The listing had said it needed new batteries. I have purchased cars from the seller before- he’s very honest. Im thinking it’s a lot w 12 volt because when @minnesotahybridbatteries rebuilt my 2006 battery and the 12 volt was low it acted like this. Similar set of issues. Now it could be completely unrelated, and expensive or it could be a low 12 volt. The fuses and 12 volt are the easiest to replace/ check so that’s my first try in the am after it’s warmed up a bit- 15 degrees in the garage is a bit too cold for my hands to work properly.

No history on the car. I bought this as a project, I purchased this car with the intent of learning. Even if it’s an expensive fix or I can’t figure it out, my goal was to learn and that I’m doing now.

Most likely, but you aren't even seeing any dash lights.

It is possible the previous owner cleared all codes before the car became nonresponsive.

But in post 1, you say:
Which is it: Is the 12V battery Good or Bad?

Since you just replaced the 12V battery, and assuming a new 12V battery, get a warranty replacement. FYI, 12.5V would be sufficient to make the Prius "READY."

If you have not already done so, recharge the 12V battery with an AGM compatible, smart 12V battery charger.

How did you test the 12V battery? If you tested w/o a load, read post #5 & #8; Is my inverter coolant pump slowly failing? | PriusChat

You should have acquired Techstream during Project #1.

Acquire the Factory Service Manual to make life easier for you. Post #3 contains a link to Toyota TIS and another member's how to convert CHM to PDF.

Do yourself a favor, NEVER buy a car that won't start, unless you enjoy that.

You know Brad and he knows the Prius. Best to have him take a quick look

It not starting is not related to the 2 batteries

Lesson learned. We paid so little for the car ($800) that even if I can’t get it to start I can sell it to a local junk yard for $1200 and sell the new 12 volt and come out ahead. I did at least make those calls before I purchased the car.

If I can’t get it started before the weekend that was the plan- first I wanted to see if I could figure it out and learn myself, the hard way. Lol

Think I may have found out why. Looks like I have a lot more learning & researching to do. Thanks to this forum I now know how to add and pull the service records. Whoop whoop.

If you're lucky, it may be a shorted inverter pump. Check AM2 fuse in the engine compartment.

Will do. Thank you. Looking forward to Techstream arriving tomorrow. I am learning so much.
