Hi folks. Just bought a 2005 Prius from a good friend. It’s totally loaded with leather HID headlights, Bluetooth, navigation all the bells and whistles. Beautiful car. MY friend bought brand new for nearly 40K. It’s been maintained well it’s whole life. Has 165K miles. It sat for a year in her garage. I bought it today and trailered it Home. Bought a new 12V battery and will install tomorrow. What do I do next ? I only paid 2K for it. She gave me a pretty good deal.

Thanks for the welcome. The car only has 2 bars of gas in it. Should I still drain it. We jumped the car off today and it only ran on the old battery for a few mins. The it stopped. The old 12v was just too flat. So I bought a new one tonight and will install it tomorrow. Should I still Fran the gas or just fill up with fresh gas. I will have the oil changed once I get the car driving. I live in an apartment so I can’t ch it myself.

If that is truly what she paid, the dealership is probably still talking about the whale they landed that day. o_O

Thoroughly inspect the vehicle inside and out, giving additional attention for evidence of rodents. Change ALL fluids/filters and flush the brake system.

hard to say, but a year can be hard on gas. you could try filling it, and if no go, then drain it.

So just put the new 12v in the car in the morning and press the power button? The car should fire right up after sitting for a year?

Most likely the car didn't really start. What it did was try to spin (crank) the engine with the HV(high voltage) battery which is most likely nearly discharged. It spins at a high enough RPM that it sounds like it's running but it's not. Continuing to do this can be very bad for the HV battery.

not likely, but possible. more likely the hybrid battery will need to be replaced.

Agree...the traction battery may be an issue. That's 12 years followed by 1 year static. It's all speculation though until you fire it up and see.

They were all gougers back then. Gulf States wanted 3-4K over.

"After" you thoroughly inspect it. Replace your FOB batteries too. Foot on brake pedal, press power and release, release pedal.

Ok. Will do. I have 2 FOBS one works the other will need a new battery. We did look over the car a little today. It was in her garage and did not appear to be any rodents. But I’ll look again. So if I replace the battery to the fob that is flat will i have to reprogram it too ?

She bought a new car and decided to sell the Prius recently. She did run the car a few times in the year. So I guess that’s good. I’m in Brooksville

    No reprogramming required if original.
