2006 Prius Advice

    I have already encountered 2 that have this issue in my area without any prior brake fluid change. One vehicle is one of my own, the other a coworker. You can expect these numbers to rise.

    Since neither of these failed from changing the fluid, would you advice against this preventative maintenance practice?

    Is there a TSB for gen2 that details this?

    Going off my recollection, I've read that Toyota had advise dealers AGAINST brake fluid flushes on the gen2 cars. Because the bleeding procedure would contribute to the failure of the actuator. But unfortunately, I cannot find any TSB that is stating that (I'm not that good with research).

    I haven't seen the TSB that advises against changing the fluid. But unless your fluid is low or very dirty, I wouldn't flush it. If it is dirty, flush it. The risk of dirty fluid causing harm is greater than not having it done.

    Contemptible if true. That advice is along the same line of advice of people not changing their transmission fluid to prevent failure, when in reality if it causes an issue the transmission was already failing.

    Sorry to bump an old thread, but I couldn't figure out how to private message Josh Imholte. I'm hoping he might get a notification of my reply here and come back to answer.

    I would be interested in knowing how the Cardone battery worked out for Josh. Is it still going strong three years later? Or were there problems with it?

    Unless you get a low mileage junkyard one, NEVER buy a used battery. Long warranties to not mean reliability, unfortunately. If you DIY you can get a kit of new cellh foe $1600 delivered and can sell any of your good old modules to lower the price further.The newpriusbatteries link is in my signature. IMO @2k1Toaster here has done an awesome job with this good as new option.

    It my shop, I had one week when I came across three Dorman batteries that had failed before they were a year old. Not answer to your question, but maybe that will help you.

    When Dave Taylor was selling his ReInVolt batteries, they proved to be reliable and long lasting (I had one installed in my 2004 Prius). After he sold the process to Dorman, their attention to detail proved lacking and the quality suffered.

    I'm not sure that's the issue. Back when Dave Taylor sold it, wrecking yards were overflowing with fresh batteries full of healthy modules.

    Today, the pool of modules is filled with old, worn out modules. Mixing and matching them is a waste of time. I think it's just that the situation has changed.

    Dare I even speculate that Dave could see the writing on the wall and took the opportunity to cash up while his business still had value.
