I have a 2006 Prius, Barcelona Red,with 125k miles. and Michelin Defender tires installed in 2013.. I am the original owner and have maintained the car.

The AC evaporator and hybrid battery failed simultaneously last week. Toyota Corporate has offered to replace the battery for $1,426 .including labor.

I'm wonder if it sound worthwhile to replace the hybrid battery before selling in the hope that it will increase the car's value by at least $2,000-3,000 or should I just sell to a used car dealer or individual as is - no repairs? The car is still driveable. I don't plan to replace the AC.

    Thanks.

OMG, definitely replace at $1426. it'll go from $2000 value to $7000 value

Alternatively, you can sell it to me for the used car dealer price of $1000 and I'll pay for the $1426 battery

its a coin flip, why spend $1500 if you are only going to get $3000 for the car and without AC its doubtful you will get more than $2000..List it on craigs list $2500 as - is because a dealer will not pay half that..I see the low gas prices has really hurt the cash sale value of the prius.
book value means nothing anymore, you don't get blue book at dealers you get black book wholesale (dealer auction prices) less repairs.

**Have you checked your 12 volt battery?

I do not know about A/C fix, but you got a fantastic offer from Toyota on the batt replace. Full price replacement is easily $3500. We do have a thread going about how to get a good deal like you got, by calling and asking for help. Sounds like you basically did that on your own. Many here feel the new Toyota batt is preferable to rebuilds.

    Replace the battery.
    Sell privately.

The Barcelona Red is a good color for G2s, and I'm thinking that some Craig's List surfer will snap this thing up for more than the trade-in price even sans A/C.

Depending on your car's cosmetic condition, the stealer that's replacing the battery might take it as a trade which you can talk about while you're working out the new battery.

Then again.....after the battery is fixed you may want to consider fixing the A/C and basking in the glow of paid-for transportation for a while.

You're a low mileage driver, but you've already clocked over 9 years on this car.

    Your call.
    Good Luck!

i would look at the value with and without the new battery to make a decision, but i would think it will be worth more than $1500. more with a brand new battery.

Get the battery done at the least.
Very hard to sell a car when it does not run.

Thanks for the advice. I've already replaced the car with a new Persona. I've been offered $2000 by a dealer as is. My hesitation is that that I don't know a ballpark figure for what the car will be worth with a new Toyota hybrid battery. It would have to bring in at least $5,500 for me to invest in the new battery, by my calculations.

I don't know what the street value is for the G2, but if you're unable to replace the battery yourself then all of this is pointless.
I'd try to sell if privately first though.
If your car's cosmetic condition warrants it, I'd give 2K for it in a flash sans battery....but the A/C makes it less of a slam-dunk case for retain versus retire.....especially in TX.

You bought the Persona without trading the G2?
If so, you have time to weight options!
    Good Luck with the Persona!!!

You can list it on craigslist now for $5500 with a new Toyota battery. See what responses you get. If you have an interested party, they would be even happier to see that they'll have the new battery from Toyota from DAY 1.

One guy in MD bargained for new HV batt (free) by the promise to buy a new Toyota. He then gave the repaired old one to his son. Maybe you could call Toyota and remind them you just bought a Persona. Anyways just saying for other readers some of the strategies are.

The MD guy is on my list:

Guess he only got them down to $750 but his 2004 was non-CARB

I gave up trying to understand how people think...
the smart move is to take the dealers offer of 2000 and be done with it..
why invest more money into a car that might never sell or have other issues...
    but that's just me.

oh please, if you were in TX, you would jump on the $2000 deal with a bad battery and 120k miles......possibly trash talking the car down another $500

That's because people are buying cars too often....like when the battery goes out. :)

Do you realise what a deal you are being offered? A new battery for $1460. Don't expect for them to hold that deal for you for too long though.

    My calcs $2000 + 1460 = (cost) 3460 (sale) 5500 (benefit) 2040

    A no brainer.
