    Hello everyone,

Just moved to the Netherlands from New York and switched to Prius thanks to taxes and gas prices here :)

2006 Prius with 216K km on it.

Realised some differences about my car and needed to ask you experts about your opinion.

Tirerack shows 185 65 15 as stock tire size, however my car has a different rim and has 195 55 16 on it.

    1) The previous owner claims these are the stock rims but I haven't seen these in any other Prius. Do you recognise it?

    2) The speedometer is off by 6-7%. It shows 100, when its actually around 93-94 according to Iphone GPS.
Should I trust the speedometer or GPS?

I tried to look up for the rim before asking here but honestly didn't know what to look for.

    TIA

16s, specifically 195/55R16, are apparently standard in Europe.

Speedometers are generally off to some extent, but 6-7% is higher than allowed in the US. I don't know the regulations in Europe.

195/55 R16 is the touring Prius tire. You have a Touring model. Or someone bought Touring rims and put that on a Base Prius.
    185/65 R15 is the base/non-touring Prius tire.

Best way to ensure speedometer accuracy is with a speedometer calibration test; depending on the accuracy of the test equipment, you can get down to 1/10th of MPH/KmH accuracy! I am sure there are companies in Europe that provide this service.

Do you recognise the rims though? Are they also standard in touring too?

This is actually incorrect in Europe. From the wheel size sites I looked up, 195/55R16 is standard in Europe.

    Goedemorgen Mike.

Here's a screen grab from the US Owner's Manual, 2007 model year anyway. There's a couple of sizes the car came with, and yours is the 16" rim size. From page 434:

    upload_2019-6-20_6-22-33.png

Speedometers will invariably display a little high. That is by design, in the hopes that it'll slow people down? I've heard too: in European vehicles the speedo offset is a bit more extreme than in North America?

The main thing is that odometer be roughly accurate, and that's likely the case. I'd think if you enter either of the above tire sizes into a tire calculator, you'll find they have roughly the same revolutions per mile.

In the US the 06' came with 185/65-15" tires., They have a diameter of 24.5".
The 195/55-16 tires you now have, have a diameter of 24.4"

    But....

Prii are calibrated at the factory to run 195/65-15" tires which have a circumfremce of 25" or, prii are calibrated at the factory to run a 25" circumference tire.

So, if you run 195/60-16" tires your circumfrence will be 25.2" a tiny bit big, your speedometer will read slightly slower than your actual speed, you could carry a garmin in cab and read it's mph output to know your speed with your undersized or oversized tires.

Remember that this car is not in the US; it's in the Netherlands, which have a different stock tire size.

Have you looked at the sticker in the door jam to see what tire and rim size the car came from the factory with yet?

Pretty much a certainty, that the OP's concerns have been addressed?

I also though about putting a larger tire such as 195 65 16 to even out the odometer gap but maybe I am overreacting? :)

I will check the door sticker and update the tread but whats more interesting is, all of you prius experts did not recognise the rims :)

    Possibly they are aftermarket?

Oversizing the tire will "fix" the speedo, and throw the odometer off. Kinda messes up the "gearing" too?

The size of the rim is all that matters, not the manufacturer, the 195/65-16 tires aren't available (no one makes that size), the 195/60-16 tires are 25.2" they are oversized .2", your present tires work, juwt adjust for the incorrect speedometer (carry a garmin gps)

The speedometer and odemeter are both correct with a 25" circumference tire, and both incorrect with any oter size tire.

OP made it clear he is in the Netherlands and purchased a European model Prius.

It is highly unlikely Toyota will give different tires for Europe vs USA vs Canada vs etc. Its about economies of scale. Two different tires is far cheaper than 10 different tires.

Emissions and crash safety standards will be tailored to the market export market.

Often times manufactures will just manufacture to the market with the higher standards for production simplicity and costs.

Yes. Go the flow of traffic. If you really want to know the accuracy, PAY to have the car tested.

Found it! I have seen that rim on a few Prius here (Los Angeles/Orange County). Apparently it was an OEM option in the USA (2007-2009), that few people got, based on my limited sightings.

I like the Gen3 (2010-2015) OEM mag wheel, that came standard on the "Persona" line. Unfortunately it's 17inches = expensive tires.
    I will live w/ the factory 15x6 and matching 185/65 R15 tires.
