I don't understand why this means that TT has no clue. I would prefer that the company take the time to properly program it into the update than rush it out the door. If you are getting a refund, mailing paper forms 2 weeks before filing electronically very likely won't put you ahead anyway.

what form do we use to get the NY state tax credit of $2000?
Isn't there also a credit on the sales tax on the hybrid cost ($3000 extra for the hybrid technology cost). I hear you take whatever your state sales tax is on the $3000 and you get that back too.

My understanding of the NY tax credit discussions here was that the credit was not passed. Does your 2nd question refer to the deduction of state taxes on Schedule A of the Federal 1040? If so, Pub. 600 states that if you use the amount from the table you can add the tax paid on the motor vehicle. This is not a credit, it is a deduction available to buyers of all cars.

Actual sales tax you've paid, as Jim said, is deductible.

As for "$3000 extra for the hybrid technology cost," I don't know where you're getting that figure. There is nothing in the pricing of the car that explicitly calls out that dollar amount.

I doubt you'd ever be able to make a claim for any type of reimbursement of this so-called "hybrid premium."

There are the sales tax deduction item, the Federal tax credit, and perhaps a state credit depending on where you live. That's it.

That is true only for residents of states that do not have personal income tax.

I beg to differ, sir. State income tax or state sales tax can be used as per page 1 of Pub. 600. I have the revised version as NJ's sales tax increased in July. Pub. 600 also implies that this is the last year for sales tax deductions.

Technically, you are right. However, I doubt that there are too many people around who can claim a bigger deduction for sales tax than for personal income tax. My answer was a follow up to a response offered by another poster to a question posed by a New York potential buyer. Knowing the level of New York income taxes, I stand by my original comment.

Selvaraj S K: Don, I am sorry to inform you that form 8910 will no longer supported by the Turbotax.
Don: thats not good. so what's plan B?
Selvaraj S K: Don, you cannot file form 8910 with Turbotax program.
Selvaraj S K: I apologize for the inconvenience caused to you.

Obviously that guy must not get paid enough to make a dumb statement like that. I had no problem doing that form with the TT program, and it computed the form correctly. But I did my taxes through another service though because TT's filing fees were too high for me, especially for state. The form is available. That guy should be fired.

I would suggest using a different online tax program.

Sometimes you get what you pay for. TT wanted inexpensive tech support and probably went to India to save 70%. How much future revenue will they lose once this thread gets around?

If you used TaAct did it also prepare the Form 6251 (AMT) and have the correct input into form 8910 for the Alternative Vehicle Credit.
I am currently trying to use TT and it doesn't seem to be doing it.

Yes, it did everything. I only had to follow the user friendly prompts and fill in the basic blanks. It cost me $7.95 to do my return.

FYI - TT has forms 8910 and 6251 available for download and filing. The software can complete a tax return now.

BTW - Lost $1600 of credit due to AMT.

I don't miss winter for 1 second. I'm from Connecticut and it was 83 degrees today in S. FL. (Please don't hate me for that statement). It's not meant to be a dig. I put up with snow & winter until age 39. I wanted to be in warm weather while I was still young enough to enjoy it. The weather in West Palm Beach is super all year 'round, except for the hurricanes. Then again, ice storms, blizzards, floods, and hurricane type windstorms aren't any better. Good luck with your refund. Mine will be here in about 4 more days. I e filed using direct deposit.
