I have a 2007 with 220k miles. Changed the hybrid battery about 3 years ago. The 12 volt battery is more than 3 years old. Changed the oil last week. This afternoon filled up with gas. This evening the check engine light came on. Drove ok but maybe slightly lower gas mileage.

I’m on vacation without very many tools with me. I looked at the obvious things under the hood. Oil, break fluid, all fluid levels looked good.

The biggest possibility to me is the 12 volt battery is going bad. Any other good guesses? If I go to an auto part store can they read any codes on it or would that have to be a dealer?

    Thanks,
    Glenn

check engine light is emissions related. Usually not a battery issue.

Wait until you get home, no biggie to have that light on. As long as it's not blinking, you can drive it without issue.

    Things you can check.

    1. gas cap is tight and not missing.

possible causes of check engine light

    1. bad 3 way coolant valve
    2. bad maf sensor
    3. bad catalytic converter
    4. bad spark plugs

The light is not blinking. I had just bought gas so I will check the gas cap first.

The spark plugs are due to be replaced and I had already planned to do that after this trip.

    Thanks,
    Glenn

Just a quick follow up. I did check the gas cap and it seemed fine. But I took it off and put it back on. A few hours later the check engine light went out.

    Thanks!
