ISSUE: after driving home today (2hr + on windy roads) it started in on some warnings and shortly thereafter began to not respond quickly to giving it gas. very, very slow acceleration.

ABOUT VEHICLE: 240k miles. New to me, but fixed up by a prius guy. only thing new: LED light newly installed by mechanic.

CODE: PO420, which my mechanic has told me isn't an issue.

Does the Cat need help? HV Issue? Transmission?

Well......the first thing you should do is check the oil.
And then check the 12 V battery.

Then I think maybe you might need a new mechanic, one who has the proper equipment to diagnose a Toyota hybrid.

If the hybrid battery has never been changed, that would be my first guess.

With those lights, if the only thing you're getting for codes is P0420, you need a more in depth scan that can verify if there are codes from the other systems. And if that comes up negative, replace 12V battery (you can also check that first, there's plenty of info on how via Google or forum search).

The Maint Rqrd means you're past scheduled oil change (5000 miles). If you pay a mechanic for an oil change they are suppose to reset that. Please check that right away, since you could be Low and Past Due.

    Welcome to PriusChat!!

Which device was used to retrieve that P0420 code (aka DTC), and was that from a recent scan?

Given the lights on the dash, you may be missing some of the other codes (DTCs).

How do you like the new LED light, and is the a headlight?

Check your oil. Get the codes scanned or even get your own scan tool. Is the red car icon on your info screen at the top?

Hybrid battery has failed and car is in limp mode,

This can be confirmed by a little car icon in the top left corner of the mfd
Looks like a turtle accompanied by the red triangle of death warning light
On the dash We call that the RTOD.

If neither of those it’s not the battery, But the battery is

Very very common, and a pain in the tookus to fix.

There are various types of battery failure one is called a ground fault which can be reset temporarily but removing the negative lead from the 12 bolt battery thereby resetting the ecu. You are then able too drive ok for a while till it happens Again. But eventually the battery must be rebuilt.

The other failure mode is a failed battery module or 2 that will not recover and battery must come out for rebuild.
