2008 Base Prius in SoCal needs new tires ASAP! ... help please

    I'm getting the Wal-Mart Goodyear tires put on today. I'll let you know how they are. They are certain to be leagues different than what I have on the car now. Mine are the "flirtin' with disaster type".

    New tires are on. $458 after taxes and disposal fees. That included resetting and installing new TPMS valves and balancing.

    It is too early to have a verdict. Right now I feel safe driving, and that is the best thing to happen.

    And my other tires were nearly bald and thrashed on the inner wall, so right now it is hard to compare them. I've put about 10 miles on them tonight. I'll be on the freeway sometime this week and I'll let you know how they handled and how my mpg is.

    Wow. You need to get your Alignment checked. After 40,000 miles your tires nowhere near that bad off.

    I am getting my tires Replaced on my 2006. It is the original OEM tires and they just turned 54,000 miles And still have a few 1000 miles to go.

    That is some great mileage you got.
    When I was doing my research on tires, I found that my results were similar to a lot of other users and they didn't get 50k out of their OEM tires either. Yes, I know I need an alignment, but it isn't that bad. The car drives pretty damn straight and smooth.
    It could have been the fact that my passenger front tire got a bad nail in it and had to be replaced. It had more tread on it than the other 3 when I just them replaced. Maybe the different levels of tread made them wear down faster.

    I will be taking it on the FWY for the first time since the tire change.
    I will let you all know how it goes.

    I got 24K out of my original HORRIBLE Goodyear Integrities.

    I would never, ever, ever buy them. I replaced them with Cooper's, mostly because that's what our local -- and I do mean local, he closes shop when the steelhead or salmon are running -- tire guy told me to use.

    When all is said and done, you can spend lots of $$$ on a tire that will save a few extra mpg each day. Or you can spend less on a safe tire that doesn't get the extra mpg. At the end of the tire lifespan, I bet total cost is within a few bucks of each other no matter what direction you go.

    BTW, my love of dirt and gravel "goat tracks," probably contributes a bit to the early demise of my tires.

    There have been Several Post here People who have Major problems with the OEM tires. I take it boils down to the environment. If you live in an area were the roads are rough, freeways patchworked up the ting yang, the tires wont last because the alignment didn't last. My SPM 54,000 miles were mostly done at 40 mph and less. Probably less than 15,000 was freeway

    has anyone given any thought to how much rubber is washed off roads into the soil and water every year, and how a high mileage tire might be better for the environment than a high mpg tire?

    Just a note to this topic, the tires I mentioned previously are working perfectly. They were a deal and I got them at Wal-Mart. So... now I don't totally despise that place. :)

    Thankfully some of the LRR tire choices are also high mileage tires. The Kumho, Primacy MXM4 (and V4), Nokian and Continental tires I believe are fairly high mileage with treadwear ratings of 500 or higher. So you don't have to chose between high mpg or high mileage. :)
