Car dealerships are exempt. Folks gotta get their vehicle serviced so is considered essential.

It's a state-by-state standard. Currently in Washington State, you'd be correct, but is subject to change by the governor at any moment. So I found a way to get my car out of hock.

I'm not doubting that the dealership said this.
Because I've read similar threads where similar statements are made.

But IMO, it makes the dealership look bad.
How can you be a dealership repair center, and say you've never seen anything as relatively common as a vehicle with a dead 12 volt, original or otherwise.
Seems to me a dead or dying 12 volt battery has to be a pretty common occurrence.

Wouldn't bolster my faith in the dealership. I mean if you don't have the experience of dealing with something as common as a dead or dying 12 volt battery, what if the problem was something REALLY obscure?

The POINT is, not that there was a dead original battery, but that it was TWELVE YEARS OLD. It came with this 2008 Prius. Not that I had any faith in this dealer shop, never having been there before.

    OK.
But I still think statements like that make the dealership sound bad.
I mean did they have the same information you had? Did the technician know it was the original battery?
12 years old, 8 years old, or 6-4 years old...a dead battery is a dead battery. Why make a statement that at all suggests you've never seen anything like it?
    Really?
They never have seen a dead battery in a vehicle? I would think any active repair facility that does any volume, would be familiar with a failed 12 volt battery, of nearly any chronological age.

    I'm a little incredulous, 12 years?

Electric Me: Maybe the dealer was saying that they never say a Prius 12v battery last 12 years.

So, have you ever heard of a Prius 12V battery lasting this long? Yes, the technician was able to determine that it was the original. The service records also reflect that it had never been replaced.

FWIW : 2001 Honda Civic, first sold in Texas before moving to California, the factory 12v battery lasted 12+ yrs before needing replacement.

I'm new to this whole Prius world. I have no experience. I'm just reporting! I did think their statement was remarkable. To their credit, they did do the diagnostic for free after I complained that I was a poverty-stricken senior. Not that it was cheap!

I have a 2005 prius with 11 year old OEM battery. Now it is possibly nearing failure, but still working fine. In the morning after overnight discharge it is shows 11.8 to 12 volts.. After half hour of driving and turning the car off it goes up to about 13V. . But then I am in much cooler northern CT and not in Texas.

    Sure that's fair.

But then it's a useless semantic argument.
If you're amazed that a Prius Battery has lasted as long as 12 years...say that.
If you're running a repair facility, don't say..."I've never seen anything like this".

No offense intended, but who cares? In the words of the great bard Shakespeare, "Much ado about very little!"
I thought it was remarkable simply that my 2008 had the original 12V battery and it had lasted over 12 years. I mistakenly thought that might be interesting. Instead, we are treated to a long, pointless thread focused on whether they should have said that!

I agree.."Much ado about very little!"
I'm dropping any further debate about the issue.
Hey, right now? We all have plenty of other things to worry about.
