    I ruined a 96 escourt when i was a teenager by running 91 octane in it for a few months..you will ask why would someone do this? that's a good question I Have no idea..young dumb and you know. So anyway just run 87 octane and don't worry about it.

    Contrary to your rude assessment here, the pilot IS allowed to mix air with his fuel.

    I had to read this one a couple of times before I understood the problem. The mixture control on an aircraft controls the fuel/air ratio. It has nothing to do with mixing fuel types. Manual mixture controls are common on gasoline aviation engines with carburetors. As the plane climbs, the air gets thinner resulting in a rich mixture. The mixture control allows the pilot to lean the engine back to an efficient setting.

    I am surprised by the vehemence of your reply. I hadn't realized that my posts were so unwelcome and irritating (except for the sarcastic ones, which are that way by design :D ).

    My original posting is under the 12 volt problems. This was what we were told was wrong the first time we had the car 2008 prius looked at.
    Now they say we need to use gas with the correct amount of alcohol. The car set off check engine lights and a few others. Tech tells us it is bad gas, the alcohol content was between 10 and 12 percent. do we need to have a test kit to check the gas before we put it in the tank? The tech also said that any other car would still function.
    I'm upset because the car is about seven weeks old and we are told the warranty does not cover this work. We were told to call our insurance company.
    The car has been in the shop twice in seven weeks!
    Gas mileage is great. But if I have to worry about what's in the gas, our old Honda ran for 128,000 miles with no engine failures.

    The Prius is designed to handle gasoline with up to 15% ethanol no problems-- It's in your owner's manual.

    The Prius is designed that way because virtually ALL major cities in the U.S. have local laws that require gasoline sold in their jurisdictions to contain 10% ethanol as an oxygenate to cut down on smog emissions.

    The ethanol in your gasoline isn't the problem. If it's a fuel problem (did they read the OBD codes?), there's probably some other contaminant in the gasoline you bought. Maybe you bought your gas at some no-name gas station and they got a contaminated storage tank or something.

    I've had my '07 since last September, and all gasoline sold in NYC where I am has 10% ethanol. No problems. Personally I don't trust no-name/small-name gas stations.. I don't like giving Big Oil my money, but at least I've never gotten bad gas from the ExxonMobil stations in my area.

    Octane requirements for a given timing are actually reduced the higher the altitude.

    All fuel consumed in Northern California comes from Tosco, so it's not just central CA that gets the same fuel.

    Today, August 4, I did a happy dance. The dealer decided to keep our car over the weekend and drive it just to be sure that their solution to our problem was the gas we used. My wife went to get the car and it wasn't there. It had stop running for the person driving it. My wife was told they would deliver to our house when it was repaired. They say if it goes to 30 days we can get a new car. It's been there 2 weeks. I just feel very relieved that it did the same thing to them. They were already telling use to submit an insurance claim for vandalism, to help cover our expenses. Now I don't have to argue with them any more!

    Thanks for the update. Pls post the DTC (diagnostic trouble codes) that your car logged as well as the resolution to the problem (assuming that the problem is resolved in the next two weeks...)

    generally octane reqmts decrease as you go up in altitude. ever notice that they sell 85 octane in the rocky mts in Colorado?

    We got the car back about 10 days ago. I don't have the final report with me, we are on vacation. They did replace the fuel pump/gas tank and things are going fine again. When I get home I can review the details.
    We live outside of Chicago, so I wasn't worried about higher altitude problems.
    I do think one of the problems at the dealer is lack of trained techs. At this dealership they have one person that they have sent for training. The shop makes a big deal over when the tech is available.
    But, the car is back and the gas mileage is great!
