Two weeks ago to the day, we were frantically going thru all the preps but dodged the bullet by about 60 miles on the weak side. Current projections have it going right down your throat!

    It's pretty bad....
But won't be a rain event like Harvey though that was brutal. It's a wind event which means no power.
    For a long time.
I have to stay for my job. So packed the wife and doggie up and she's in a hotel room in ashville nc tonight.
If no power for long time she will go to New Hampshire and stay with friends. Could be weeks.....sigh...

Stay safe out there. You're one of the brave ones that are staying behind......to work of all things.

Nooooo, I don't do anything that requires a lift. Not even oil changes.

Ed, what kind of employer is making you stay!? I find this very upsetting. When I lived in Slidell LA we evacuated for every hurricane. Didn't your county issue evacuation orders?

If we can just get through this repair, the car will be maintained properly. There's no sense buying a reliable car if you're not going to take care of it.

I don't have a Prius mechanic yet. Thank you for your offer to help! I am touched by the generosity shown by this community. I need someone who can work on hybrids because we have three in the family (a 2008 Ford Escape, and a 2012 Prius Plug in which we just acquired after purchasing the '08 Prius). Are there any tips or secrets to finding a good hybrid mechanic? I've been searching online but haven't found anyone yet. Nobody I know has a hybrid except my brother and he is not the stickler for good maintenance like I am. I noticed there are a couple of Priuses in my neighborhood and I could ask who they use, but I bet they just go to the dealership.

This place has a near 5 stars on Google. Website states they service hybrids from multiple brands including Toyota. He's about an hour and some change away from Hampton Grove. Might be worth calling and checking out.

I'd stay away from AAA approved shops.

I checked out the website you found. This guy really does sound like a good car repair person to go to. I had not looked in the Birmingham area because it's about 2 hours away from my house. I'd have to figure out logistics unless I was positive they could fix it in one day. I will definitely keep him in mind if I can't find something closer. That was SO nice of you to go to the trouble to find him!

It was a boring 15 minute break!

Unless the tranny is in fact not at fault then you're definitely looking at more than a 1 day repair. With major repairs like that shops like to drive the car a few days to make sure everything is good before handing back the keys.

Reminds me back when I owned a 2003 Subaru Legacy. That thing was fun as hell, especially in the snow. But they're notorious for blowing head gaskets and sure enough I blew mine. With the design of the Subaru engine you have to pull the engine out and at the time I didn't have access to a hoist so it went off to the shop and I lost it for 2-3 months! I borrowed a pickup truck in the mean time but man did it suck to loose my car.

I don't think it will take that long for yours, mine was mostly because of holidays and that shop is always busy. But car ownership can really suck at times and it'll be good for her to know that while she still has parents immediately available to her that can help her out.

My adoptive parents ditched me a couple weeks after my first cars engine blew up! That f*>€&¥ sucked.

Side note: perhaps you two could make a day of it, if you happen not to find anyone closer. I have no clue how hip that area is but a girls day out would be cool. I know my girlfriend is always looking for reasons to travel two hours up to Eugene Oregon!

I hope you are right but...........this is a HUGE storm and is moving rather slowly.
In some places, the water problem might rival Harvey.
In coastal areas, it might actually be worse overall.
Torrential rains PLUS a storm surge.

Your adoptive parents ditched you? Had you lived with them your whole life or just a short while? That sounds really rough, and cold on their part.

Regarding the girl's trip, I'm not sure there are any hip places in Alabama, though there is some shopping over there...might have to but the bullet and take two cars, and plan to leave it for a few days. I live in a Huntsville suburb. Huntsville's the 3rd largest city in the state; one would think there would be one decent hybrid car mechanic here! I haven't given up looking. I've just gotten delayed. We are hosting an Irma evacuee for a couple days.
