    Hi!

If anyone has some free time, I'd love a second pair of eyes to verify CA CARB emissions warranty online for 2009 Prius base model. This is valuable info for many of us and I'm thinking I missed opportunity to get coolant control valve paid for last week. Holding off on coolant temp sensor for now.

My 2009 Prius was initially purchased in MA and is now registered in CT (both CA CARB states). I'm really clear on this because I did extensive research before buying as some of you know. : } From what I just read, if I had brought my Prius for a smog check when coolant valve malfunctioned (engine light on) it would have failed emissions test. Then the repairs for coolant valve and temp sensor would be potentially covered by warranty. Fed Carb Law states vehicle must meet two requirements to file warranty claim. One must fail to meet emissions standards AND cause a penalty but CA Carb law states states vehicle must just fail. No mention of penalty required.

CA Carb section of warranty states :

For 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first:

    • If your vehicle fails a smog-check test, all necessary repairs and adjustments will be made by Toyota to ensure that your vehicle passes the test. This is your Emission Control System PERFOR- MANCE WARRANTY.

So despite my car not needing smog check yet, it's looking like I could have gone in for $20 emissions test and I would have failed. Then file warranty claim with documentation and get parts paid for. Am I making any sense? I'm guessing this is why CA mechanic said these parts would be paid for under warranty in CA.

    Any insight greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Apparently the deciding factor regarding emissions warranty is whether the sicker under hood states CA PZEV or CA SULEV. Apparently some 2009 models have PZEV rating and some don't or maybe this is only in CA. Only PZEV rated Prii have the longer CA emissions warranty although my SULEV does have the extended 10/150,000 hybrid battery warranty. Seems a bit inconsistent...oh well.
