Now before someone says use the search button, I have for hours. My daughter's 2009 mfd started shutting off and rebooting today. I've read about the 04-05 info from hobbit, but the symptoms are different. I'm a former auto mechanic and not afraid to try to fix it if possible. Is eBay an option if I can't fix it. Any up to date advice is greatly appreciated.

Not sure, I'm new to Prius. My daughter's car has been trouble free so far. What's the best/easiest way to check it?

put a volt meter on the jump point under the hood first thing in the morning before turning the car on.
it's in the main fuse box, instructions in the o/m. easier than uncovering the battery in the hatch.

Do you have a volt meter? A trickle charger? See if it's below 12.5 in ignition mode. If so, try charging it at 2 amps for a few hours. Then take it and have it load tested unless you also have a tester. If it's the 46 size battery, it's rated at 325 CCA I think. If it's the 34 size, it's 275 CCA.

Here you are (I keep this handy since folk are always asking!):
    Checking the 12V AuxBattery:
DO-IT-YOURSELF TEST PROCEDURE (thanks to jdenenberg):
    - Without brake pedal, press the Power button once and release to enter ACC mode
    - Press and hold the MFD Info button, then turn the headlights on and off three times to enter Maintenance mode; release Info button
    - Press “Menu” (on screen)
    - Press “Display Check”
    - Press “Vehicle Signal Check” - the battery voltage is shown and should be about 12.4 to 12.8 Volts (normal for an unloaded battery)
    - Again without brake pedal, press Power button and release to put a current load on the battery - the voltage should stay above 12.0V (if less than 12.0V the battery is not well, or there is a fault or unusual load somewhere)
    - Press brake pedal and press Power button once to enter "Ready" mode - the battery is now charging at about 14V (if less than 13.6V or more than 14.4 there may be a problem with the charging circuit)
    - Turn car OFF to leave Maintenance mode

BTW: Welcome to PriusChat! - hope this helps - Wil :)

I followed the instructions. It took about 20 tries. The display would freeze with either a white line or a black line. Then it would reboot to the Toyota logo. 12.6v acc mode and 12.3v under load. Couldn't check charge, screen rebooted.

I've been scanning eBay. The 7 button units are expensive. Can I swap a 4 button in it's place? My daughter doesn't use bt or nav.

I'm not sure if it would work or not. I don't think I have a 7 button left, I think I only have a 4 button. But I have a friend in Corinth that may have some 2nd gen stuff left. He's fixing up 3rd gen cars now.

Is there a way to determine part number without removal?

Ok guys, new question. I was trying to access the diagnostics menus. I can get into the first menu by going to accessory mode and turning the lights on and off three times while holding the info button. I want to access the level two screen but can't. It's the one with the calibration mode. You're supposed to do the three click light trick and it goes to the level two screen. It's not. Help please.

…BTW (I don't know if this makes a difference) but you only have to turn the light switch to the first click (i.e. it is not necessary to turn the headlights on, just the lights! (FWIW)

You're correct, one click works. I still can't get to level 2 screen with calibration.
Edit: I watched many vids. Finally found one with the info. After you get into the first menu, you can touch the top left corner and then the bottom right corner. That takes you to level 2.

So far this is what I've learned. According to Todd @TampaPrius.com, you cannot downgrade the mfd from 7 to 4 button. 2009 prii 7 button units have part #
86110-47220 and 86110-47260. Mine was the one ending with 60. I used this video
and removed the mfd to verify part#. Cleaned all connections and reassembled. The mfd started working again. Maybe loose connection. Thanks to everyone and especially Todd. Hope it keeps working, but I know what I need and how to install it if needed.

Thanks so much for the links. Todd was beyond expert on mfd's and didn't seem bothered by my questions.

Update: after a couple days the unit shut off again. Usually on hot days. Stays on longer on cool days and at night. Ordered a replacement from eBay. Will follow up when I install the replacement.
