2010 Knocking and Thunking on Idle - with video/audio

Have you fixed anything yet? Or still diagnosing? For what its worth I did some testing with egr disabled and with egr functioning and perfectly clean and I really couldn't get a large difference in mpg. I would unplug it and drive it around and see what you think. The egr reduces throttle body use by around 10% but it just isn't a large difference.

 

My 2 cents:

The damper failing is the canary in the coal mine. They fail cus head gasket is allowing coolant into cylinder. Head gasket fails long to long neglected carbon buildup in EGR system.

 

Yeah well you better look at the price of the damper etc etc The transmission has to come out to put the damper in I don't know if I would be paying $4,000 I think the labor for my guy to pull the transmission do whatever he has to do behind the transmission and put the transmission back would be about $800 it's like 9 volts one drive axle what have you Not a not a humongous production but certainly not a break job so with my guy that part would need to be about $2,500 or plus for me to get to the 4000 you're talking about I hope that piece is in anywhere near 2500 I have to go out and look at mine which is sitting on the floor in the shop I don't know if it can be messed with or not whether it's a sealed system or what the deal is It looks like a clutch disc sandwich in between a pressure plate and the flywheel but is a little different more compact etc so this is not Toyota specific work so I wouldn't be looking to have the car at the Toyota dealership just because it says Toyota in red and white on the Sign . But that's just me I'm not having any of this 4,000 repair business pretty much from anybody I put a whole engine in transmission in a 2010 for under $3,500 and didn't do anything special anybody could have had this and gotten this done.

 

Get a JDM spec engine from a JDM prius And while you're at it get a transmission from the same supplier so that your engine and transmission will be similar mileage not the 200 that you have now more like 70,000 get that put in your car and you've eliminated most of the problems that you just got finished with or in the midst of your damper will be lower mileage or transmission will be lower mileage your engine will be lower mileage and all of it will be working and running so if your batteries worth a darn the car should only be down about a week while the engine comes to you from New Jersey or out west depending upon where you are and then your mechanic pulls out your old engine and trans puts these two new pieces together with the bolts from your old and drops it in your car connects everything that should be about 8 hours so your battery and car shouldn't be down longer than about 4 or 5 days so then it by right should start back up and charge up and work okay and be on back on the road unless of course you have a failing battery that needs to be dealt with then that's another issue but easily dealt with for $7.50 $800 in most places.

 

The damper is where the clutch or torque converter would be.
Basically, it's a clutch the transmission uses to turn the motor over to start it.
To engage the engine and transmission.
There are springs in it, like a clutch disc, that brake over time and usage.

Then you will get a jerky sensation when it engages....

 

I am not sure you have really captured the noise yet. Try to video the actual engine with the hood up when it is doing it.

Unanswered questions:
What is it doing when you have this noise? Is it shaking the engine? Does it sound like metal to metal? Does it go away pretty quick and run good the rest of the day?

 

This is a Gen 3 car usually wants this clunking banging business starts no matter what it is it started and things have started to happen massively cleaning the EGR at this point may make you feel well about what's happening but the fact that it's already been happening the damage is starting to occur so spending money on cleaning seems kind of futile to me personally that would be like sending the janitor out to try and clean up dried paint off the bank floor in the middle of the lobby right kind of not so smart they should have gone out there when it was wet before it dried so they could just mop it up something along those lines here we're doing similar I have ADD I don't have to spend too much time looking at diagrams over and over again but my daughter does so if that's what you need to do get the diagrams do the looking there's a dude on here with all the cleaning stuff in his signature that you can spend hours days and months going over exactly how you're going to do this generally if you go to a junkyard or send someone to a junkyard they can get the cooler the silver part of the metal pipe and another whole exhaust manifold probably for less than $88 and then you can drop that off to any automotive or mechanical machine shop and tell them to tank that mess and you want it whistle clean when you pick it up probably $35 or so and when you pick up your EGR cooler pipe the intercooler itself and the and the intake manifold they will be whistle clean You can check the intake manifold with a long quarter inch brush that's on a wire some people use them to clean condenser coils and the like a big version of this goes up your dryer vent You want one that's about a quarter inch diameter that's pretty small and you can push that through the little ports that go into the intake manifold to make sure those are clear there's instructions online but they should be very clean coming from the tank at the machine shop that eliminates standing around in the yard brushing cleaning using whatever chemicals are in people's signatures etc etc The stuff that the machine shop tank is going to use you couldn't even put on your hands It would mess them up and that's how I get mine handled it's quick cost about 40 bucks I already have the parts in my arsenal ready to be cleaned and I have a set that's already clean so I have two one on the car getting dirty one in the shop already cleaned that I have not even flipped flopped over yet because I'm not near dirty You can view the flow restriction and some software right on a laptop if you're that concerned and want to see it but I strongly believe the damage is probably already been done so if that's the case you'll just be adding these costs and units of time to the total of the end result of your repair whether that's an engine the center section whatever just be prepared that it's possible you'll be majorly overhauling an engine not real smart in my world or replacing with a Japan domestic market engine that hasn't been dealt with in the States yet I eat nobody's worked on it here.

No, but the computer may need a trip or two to readjust to the reduced restriction.
Is your mechanic cleaning the intake manifold EGR passages, the EGR cooler, and the valve?

 

The software is just firmware updates for the given computers in the car You want to have the latest software for all your equipment in your car generally speaking if possible That's not too hard to do I mean every couple years you should just check with your service department or your parts department guy and he can tell you whether any new firmware updates have come out for your particular vehicle etc etc. I have a 2009 and it has all the latest updates for all the computers in the car installed in the car seems like a good idea there were one or two updates that hadn't been done probably because the car's been on the road and never was at the dealer for anything most of it's life which was not with me That's how a lot of Prius roll. They got put on the road and '0708 whatever and never did anything until 2019 2020 they were just on the road getting tires 12 volt batteries washer fluid and oil changes even the CVT wasn't changed or the inverter fluid looks pink everything looks great leave it alone. That's just how it was done with the lowest maintenance car on the planet. Oh well
