2010 Plug-in Prius will have 12.4mile EV range

    Interesting... yet still not good enough for mass market 10 years / 150,000 miles.

    I believe the industry standard for the end of life is 80% of the initial performance level. Of course PHEV Prius also should meet this standard.

    so if you drive 50,000 or 100,000 miles, as long as the time frame is the same, degradation would be equal?? interesting

    Yea, it seems the max that the laptop batteries chemistry (with cobalt-oxide) can extend is 5 years. The owner has the option to charge up to 95% or 90%. 90% should extend the calendar life a little bit.

    Li-ion is almost here but we are not there yet. I applause Tesla because in 5 years, we would probably have a better battery technology.

    PHEV Prius will be testing with multiple packs using different Lithium chemistries. The best one will be picked based on the real world results.

    maybe a redesign of the Nimh chemistry is maybe a route panasonic needs to look at?
    combine Nimh with some other chemistry like where other chemistry is combined with Litium etc.

    NiMH has proven to have a very long calendar life. Darell with his 2002 RAV4 EV is a proof of that as well as the 12 years old Priuses. However, NiMH has the weight issue. The large format NiMH patent is still owned by the oil company and they are not making any.

    That's why everybody is looking for the reliable, cost effective, high power density (low weight) and recyclable (easily?) Lithium route.

    Li is coming out with different technologies and the price is continuing to drop. i can t help but feel that there is a little misguided drama here on Toyota's part about testing the technology. i think they are waiting for Li prices to drop far enough to offer a basic plug in at the $25,000 price point more than gathering additional data

    2014 is the ending of that patent or not.

    yes well its maybe stuppid to say this because i geus i am not the only one to think and or say this maybe
    but i have seen some stuppid thing that you would expect to be normal in my lifetime.

    may not have to wait for the NiMH patent, eestor made another announcement on their latest independent 3rd party tests of their barium nitrate. apparently the results were "better than hoped for"

    Guess what I found? According to the 2001 National Household Travel Survey (2008 version is in the work), the average To/From Work trip is 12.11 miles.

    There are only two types of trips 12.4 miles will not meet on average. Those two types are only 3.9% of all trips.

    This just shows how useful PHEV12.4 as some may have overlooked. The study is 8 years old so I assume we drive further these days.

    Presumably this 12.4 mile range would be cut in half for places
    like San Francisco, where many of us only get 36-42 mpg driving
    up and down hills mixed in with some flat commute on a freeway to
    work and/or cross-town stop-and-go. All of this "pure EV" ranging
    and "pulse-and-glide" stuff mainly works in the flatlands, right?

    All I know is that when I go up a Frisco hill, the gas
    engine kicks in regardless of speed, and I would
    suspect this would be true for a plug-in Prius as well...

    The hybrid Prius is designed to use the best combination of engine and motor.
    The plug-in Prius is designed to use motor power as much as possible in the depression mode.

    That's good news, thanks! EV mode works quite well
    for BART trains, electric Muni buses, and streetcars
    in this town, so the more motor, the better.

    Note: there are so many Priuses in San Francisco
    that it seems like every 5th car, sometimes. When
    I mention that we generally get sub-40 mpg, it's
    much better than sub-18 in minivans.

    Having said that, please understand that many
    drivers like me, who go to Luscious Garage for
    service and advice, would rather pay more $$
    for a bigger battery than anything else -- my family
    would rather pay $2000-3000 toward more battery
    than for a fancy navigation system which can be
    done on an iPhone. Plug-ins should maximize
    battery and not frills. I know it is less profits for
    Toyota to maximize battery vs. silly extras, but
    many of us will pay well for more EV mode mileage.

    If Toyota keeps optimizing the tradeoffs too precisely
    for maximum profit, we can just buy a Tesla to
    fulfill our EV dream!

    Unlike BART and/or the Muni buses, the Prius can't attach to the live wire or rail for a recharge.

    Average trip length is not useful here. It could mean that many people underutilize the capacity, and many don't have enough.
