My 2010 is at 107k miles; just completed new installation of 4 bearing-hub assemblies, and 4 brakes rotors. Both the front/rear brakes were at 66% pad health, so i left them be. The front right wheel was making minor noise turning at low speeds; bearing swapout removed the noise altogether. Overall the wheels prior to the project, were rolling in great shape with coasting and braking and i was already getting avg MPG ~56 city / ~49 combined city/hgwy. I guess you can say i was bored when i opened up the wheels and saw some moderate rusting of all 4 bearing hubs. Even the old rotors were in OK shape, but since they cost only ~10/ea; i figured i put in new ones. Getting in also allowed me to really good a thorough cleaning on both those front universal arm joints. Funny how both hub-bearings didn't house a dust cover inside the universal joint; i didn't have time to go out an order a set; so i left them as is. Only challenge was left front CV axle was stuck into the bearing hub; i had to reverse and re-insert the CV axle bolt, and then mallet-hammer a deep well socket atop the CV axle bolt. About a dozen good hits freed up the lock-rusted CV axle bolt. I can only imagine how challenging this project would be at 150k miles; impossible at 200k; unless i brought in a dremel tool.

    Enjoy the pics.

Wow. Did you put new knuckles on too, or were they just that shiny at 107k?

Chapman-- that was added value in getting under the wheel well. Replacing bearing-hub forced me to remove the knuckle and clean it up. Fortunately those knuckles were already in good clean shape at 107k miles. i just picked this 2010 Prius up last month used, and i was quite please as to how clean the engine compartment and overall car was in and out. I hammered the heck out of those old rusted bearing-hubs with brass-punch and lube. I have access to an awesome deepsink degreaser; scrubbed both front knuckles nice and clean; deepsink also great for striping rust-in old bolts as well. Brought bolts and knuckles back to almost new and reset with a little dab of anti-lock lube.

    cheers.

On my 2010 Prius, I had already disconnected the bottom and top of the front bearing knuckle assembly and tried getting the drive shaft out of the spline using a big punch and a 5 lb sledge hammer, but it wouldn't budge even with using lubrication. I had a 1 inch hammer drill from HF Tools on hand so installed the big punch bit that came with it, switched it to hammer mode, put the punch bit in the hole in the center of the axle, turned it on for about 2 seconds and the axle came right out with no fuss.

    NICE work Stellarnaut.
the next steps in tearing down that knuckle was fun and cool.
hammer punching the bearing hub free with penetrating oil and a good size vice was essential for me.
getting into the wheel well was great to see what i was fully dealing with.
my 2010 Prius is in great shape, and eventhough sold it to a friend, i still do sleep easier knowing it
