    Hi
Can someone advise me about the valve issue(s) that the 2010 seems to have a reputation
for having. I am looking at an extremely low mileage 2010 - phenomenal condition- and would
like not to purchase a problem. There is a site on Ebay that reviewed all 5 generations (the good and bad) and advised not to get a 2010 because of this major valve issue.

My 2008 has turned 404,000 miles with no major repairs. You can read about her
in the main forum for Gen II. I am anticipating she will want to retire at some point!

Many thanks for your comments. Stay well.

it's the egr valve and related parts. 2010 is a great car, but a small number are having problems with clogging and sometimes blown head gaskets around 100k.
the cause is unknown, causing further frustration.

best you can do is add an oil catch can and inspect the egr circuit until it needs cleaning.

i wouldn't hesitate to buy a low mile 2010 at the right price if you're prepared to do the above, because you're starting with a clean slate. some people have put over 200k without doing anything and have had no problems.

2011, 12 and 13 aren't likely to be any better, they are just newer.

2014 got new pistons and 15 got new rings. or vice versa. but we don't know if that is the solution either.

toyota has never admitted much, or why they made the change, to my knowledge.

I have 202,000 miles on my 2010. I've cleaned the egr system twice. Along with the intake manifold.
First time the cooler wasn't bad at 138745 miles. Mostly driving 65mph or less.
I cleaned it again at 199,932 miles. It was almost clogged. But, I had been driving 70mph and more
and more aggressive in the city. So HOW it's driven makes a difference.
I use 1-1.5 quarts every 10,000 miles. Again, depending on how fast and hard I drive it.
I don't believe the rings are the problem. It's the valve guide seals. They get hard and don't seal anymore.

If you can do the work yourself, you'll be spending a lot less money. The work is not that hard to do.
How many miles on the one you are interested in?

Someone bought the 2014 piston rings, they did NOT fit the 2013 pistons. They were too thick.
They were the same size as the 2015 pistons I believe he said.
No one seems to know for certain, they are only "guessing" by certain part numbers they found.
It seems they changed the pistons and rings for 2014 and newer ones for the 2015 model.

You can always clean the rings, and clean out the pistons grooves. Then put new valve guide seals
on. That's probably where 90% of the oil usage is coming from...

Your not going to see a Gen 3 go 400,000 + without several major things happening.

I bought some parts off a courier out here that had a 2015 with 375k miles on it before a big rig decided he wanted the lane the courier was in:cool:.

All he did was oil changes;).

I bet his would have made 400k miles had it not been for the big rig :).

One data point that suggests otherwise(y).

That was a purely random meet up when I owned my old 2010;).

I'm sure in the land of Prii out here I could gather more data to prove that it isn't that rare:).

    But for another time(y).
