We just purchased a 2011 Prius 2 and understand the replacement battery costs approx. $200 pertineer. Has anyone ever changed out the one terminal connector so that we could purchase a regular 12v battery from a local auto store for under $100? I think it uses a 27 BCI group battery or similar group. Toyota made the positive terminal smaller for a reason and we know why. What say y'all???

    TIA

You can buy the correct battery from Amazon for $147, made by optima.

You should not put a regular battery inside the cabin of your Prius, those are made for exterior engine compartments. It isn't vented properly and in an accident, acid with spill all over your passengers.

You can safely use any AGM battery that is externally vented. The drop in replacements use JIS posts and are S46B24R sized.

If you want to use SAE posts, Installation Kit for Optima battery in Prius is the right cables.

(Gen 4 has the battery under the hood, as opposed to in the cabin with your passengers, so the battery can be less specialized)

The Toyota replacement battery has a 84 month prorated warranty, so it may be a better investment than it seems.

JC, you're making it sound like that the Prius is like an airliner, with oxygen masks above the passengers, except sub water balloons full of acid, lol. How about acid might splatter passengers, lol? The battery is way at the back corner, under the floor boards.

Still, I agree with everything else, use the cables and clamps that came with the car, and a properly sized and spec'd AGM battery.
