Going home from family dinner and half way home, I get the Check Hybrid System message with the triangle and check engine light, etc.
The car let me keep driving and we made it home. It stressed me out though. I looked it all up from Google, to this forum and everywhere else. I had a feeling it was not any of what's mentioned here. I had a feeling the error message was a way for the car to tell me to replace my brakes. I bought the replacement brake kit from 1A Auto for $135 plus tax and shipping. I replaced the brakes, rotors and power her On.

Guess what?! The Check Hybrid System error is gone!

Lesson learned? Toyota doesn't have a sense of humor when it comes to error messages like Unix.

That's a pretty Gnarly story. But how did you know it was the brake? Just a feeling?

Two weeks earlier, I heard the brakes squeeling (out of the blue). It's only been 4 years and the pedal wasn't like going all the way down like it really really needed to be changed, you know. But it was worth a try because it was only $135 vs the cost of having to tow it to the mechanic, pay the hourly rate and then them just telling me that the cost for the fix (even if it's the brakes) would be over $500.
It was worth $135, plus I love 1A Auto for their parts and the DIY vids.

This car has a brake issue where the brake booster leaks pressure. That can explain the pedal issue you're experiencing. The repair is over $2000. Hopefully that's not the problem you have

Yep. I'm the second owner at 80k miles. The maintenence record is in Toyota's website and it starts at around 5k miles. I got tired of spending over $100 for oil changes so I started to do them myself. And that was the last thing they recorded for the car.
It's has some dings but it drives great. I want to put an OCC on it next.

When you did the brakes, did you unplug the 12v battery to the brakes?

If so then that is why the CEL and codes went away, it is like reseting the codes with a scanner.

You may still have the issue and it may return in or around 250 miles.

At 330 miles, knocking on wood, still no error message. I have to replace the tires, replace the valve cover gasket(?) I think it's the valve cover gasket, front under carriage and wheel well plastics. All to make it look nicer. Question, what would it be worth then after all that? 20220808_220259.jpeg

Ok, it came back after 1,250 miles. Shop by the house said that the toyota hybrid would be 3 weeks out.
Passed by the shop. Guess what came in this morning.
Now, I just have to find $4,500. Double what it wudda cost in 2019. Then I gotta change the head gasket and then...gonna sell it for $10k now.

I must have forgot it was 1,250 miles.
Also you can save by getting one of the lithium HV batteries half the price.

Check my profile for lithium link.
