Yeah shouldn't forget to report this.

Not sure if I had it pre rebuild but post rebuild I noticed valve tick after engine has been off for some time.

Using royal purple tick went away as far as I can tell.

A new or rebuilt short block isn't that much more is it?
You could just clean rings, or get new ones and hone out the cylinders.
And of course replace the valve guide seals...

    Unless the blocked cracked.

That's pretty much what I did.

I got into watching people rebuild engines lately and I would do a couple of things differently. Like getting over rings and hand fit them.

Even getting short rebuild there is questions like how good is the rebuild. Did they hand fit rings of did they do as I did. Hone and put new standard rings in. This engine seems to me it needs as tight of a ring as tolerances can take.
Even with a hand hone it doesn't really take out out of round. It really only gives fresh surface for rings to seat. So I can say yes cylinders are honed but cylinders can still be out of round.
To fix out of round is makeing them oversized. The need the $1000.00 pistons. Which blows my mind the cost. Many other oversized pistons are like 1/2 that and less. I don't even know how much a machine shop would charge to bore them.
I also probably would have gone with coated bearings too.

I would guess all parts and shop cost probably would cost between $1500 and $2000 to do super perfect diy bottem end rebuild. Probably closer to $2000. Might be better then original Toyota OEM at that point.
But I don't even know if I like DNJ parts I never heard of them before. I might contact Mahle or some other company to see if they have them unadvertised.

Oh then there is head work ARRRRRRGGGGG.

Unless you WANTED to do it, I think it would be more cost effective to get a new short block,
or remanufactured one, from a qualified rebuilder. Plus you'll get a warranty.
My personal believe is it's not the rings. I would more suspect the valve guide seals.
I've seen that with other motors. But Toyota is not really any different,
You can measure the bore to see if it's out of round. And boring it out is reasonable if it not too bad.
But cost of that, then pistons, rings, and YOUR labor, is close to a new one.
Or even get a used low mileage motor with a blown head gasket and use the short block.
I hate to see parts wasted, and would want to fix it.

I definitely wouldn't clean rings even good oversized rings with hand fit would be well worth the effort and worry. good Oversized rings I've seen for under $70 and a hand grinder for $50 would be well worth having easy of mind that they are well fitted and best possible. Now I believe would have to use standard oil scrapers tho with standard pistons.

Yes I have seen valve stems guides and there seals be a problem in many engines.

This pcv system is really funky tho. Very sensitive to blow by. Since where they choose to attach the pcv valve to intake produces alot of vacuum. If the spring looses any strength the vacuum could open the valve when it's not supposed to be open. If there is too much blow-by the valve can be open when it's not supposed to be. Really funky Ballance there.

I really only realized this when I saw that clear hose get crushed by the vacuum. That's when I ordered a new valve.

Warrantees well the amount of oil I'm getting out of pcv now is within specs. So no warranty would apply.

Well I think it could be better. So more precise mechining would need to be done. That's really beyond what you could buy as a rebuild.

Really have to watch with word play. Only way to know if it's done perfect is to do it your self.

It's kinda like different between engine rebuilt and port and polish. Rebuild generally will bring engine to oem good but you can make it better then that.

Not bad at all 700 miles. That's a 16.9 oz bottle.
Pcv valve is still old one. I did add stp oil treatment. IMG_20200307_102802.jpeg IMG_20200307_102756.jpeg

Maybe should start thread for these custom parts and where to find them. Really rebuilding an engine is fairly simple.

I think I'll throw a high tech rag in there to get premium dampening.

Oil can content for 2k miles. I guess pretty good for this strange pcv system. I'm watching the oil separate. IMG_20200316_094259.jpeg IMG_20200315_114101.jpeg

Don’t want to bring you down but when this happens with my 2011 Prius at around 240K, I tried all the recommendations. I ended up blowing the engine. I did have a used engine put in the car for around $4,000. It was worth the money because I love my Prius. Good luck!

Steuped, raphael wouldn’t have much a difficult time to replace his engine if it does blow up.

I won't be paying that much of and when this engine takes a crap again. Next time I plan on getting cylinders bored and sleeved with new pistons and better rings. Along with a valve job and bearings. Will be better then used engine I'm just looking at how much it will cost for the shop work.

Probably something to do with fill up technique. There are somethings in life you COUNT on, and Toyota BS'ing the mpg is one of them.
