Let's hope it will be more reliable than Honda's previous hybrid systems. Battery failures, the need for periodic software updates, and CVT fears have made the Honda hybrid ownership experience less appealing than Toyota's.

It would actually be a very good news if it could really make up to 68 mpg! We'll just have to sit tight and wait for the actual MPG after they are released for sale.

There is no doubt about the 68 mph, but you should understand that the drive cycle was ~ 45 mph constant. Who knows what highway at 70 mph or your city driving would return.

Probably close to the 40-44 they are claiming.

Where is Bob Wilson graph of Gen3 Prius showing MPG at 45mph?

    Why so much hate?

Although I come from a Honda Insight and do really enjoy my Prius, I detect a lot of mindless Honda-hatred on this site which is totally uncalled for.

Toyota has a better hybrid system in the sense that it does deliver better mpg and more drivability. I mainly switched because I needed more space and ease of ingress/egress in the car. Otherwise I'd still be driving an Insight. Honda's IMA is different and strange, but it does deliver excellent mpg. Much better than the EPA values on the sticker. I averaged 49.5 during the time I had my Insight. My Prius has a higher average now (~52) but my Insight (and all my other Hondas) seemed to be put together a little better.

They do make a very good product and are a great competitor for Toyota to keep them on their toes. Both companies excel in different areas and have different philosophies about transportation and their technologies. But in the end I wouldn't trust my hard-earned dollars to many other car makers.

If Honda has improved their Civic Hybrid -- hats off to them. That's less gas consumption and pollution which benefits us too, even if we choose to not go that route.

I doubt it has an electric A/C.

But real hypermilers do not use the A/C.;)

GenII has electric driven AC, so it runs even when the car is AutoStopped. But, you will get kicked out of AutoStop quicker, since AC will run through the big battery quicker. Still a fairly good balance, as long as stops are not too long it usually does not kick out.

It may have something to do with one Accord owner trolling over here.

I had the impression Honda went back to the traditional AC.

    Re: Why so much hate?

Its OK and quite natural to detect a bit of that here and there. That's what we get when we love the car choices we make. :D

But to be fair, it annoys me in equal amounts when myopic Honda fans (especially the gear head types) trash the Prius with nothing more than the same old ignorance and mis-information.

Just put on a thick skin now and then and seek out the wiser and more knowledgeable folks at PC... there are many more here than in any other online community I know. ;)

2012 Honda Civic Picture has a a rendering that shows the entire battery pack. It also mentions the li-ion pack is 20 pounds lighter than the previous pack.

Low 40's is a decent improvement for it.

Looks like it will be more difficult to grill block, at least: the usual pipe insulation won't work that well.

    Yes and no.

The current HCH-II has the A/C belt-driven when the engine is running but electrically driven when Auto-Stop is engaged.

Indeed. That is the confusing part. ;)

The AC unit always starts in electric whether the gasoline engine is running or not, and the belt driven portion only engages when the load demands are too high (or SoC too low) for the electric AC half of the compressor to handle.
It is a - one of a kind - hybrid scroll compressor that actually works quite well, so I am quite happy it was retained for the HCH-III and not deleted as it was in the HI-II and CR-Z.

    Cheers;
