    Hello all.

2012 Prius base. Good shape clean title high miles. Blown head gasket.

Found out it’s common issue with my year and model. Repair cost higher than cars value. I have replaced the hybrid battery with a reman from auto parts store some years back and no issues. Just seeing if I can recoup any money by parting out. Selling hybrid battery separate etc…. Any thoughts?

    Thanks

Parting out a car is skill best suited for an established business and is usually a DIY disaster. And by not explaining where in the USA you're located we can't point you to someone near you who could help.

Where are you located??? That's important.
Are you not willing to replace the head gasket yourself? Or just don't want to take the time?

Got a repair quote from dealer 6k. Cars worth 5 with no issues if I sell it my self. I’m a diy guy but head gasket is more I wanna bite off. I swapped the hyb batt myself so I know how to pull it.

Very nervous about a private mechanic. I don’t have a guy that I know. Will they machine the head? Go through the coolant system? Etc.
if I put in 3000 in a cheaper repair and it fails in 6 months I’m out.

I will take it to the crusher for a couple hundred just seeing about options if any.

How much would somebody pay for the car as it sits? Still runs so the battery’s not drained.

    thanks again for the replies

Put it on facebook marketplace. A prius with a blown head gasket is worth $1500 ish probably less. If you part out you can also get $1500 ish. But time is not free.

I would say now is the time to gamble on a $300 head gasket kit. If you fail guess what the car still doesn't run and if you can afford to lose $300 its not too bad. A lot of the times over the years i get lucky and am successful at doing whatever process it was i had never done before. Eventually you get good at it and its not gambling anymore (as much)

For what exactly, head gasket repair, engine replacement with salvage, or?
