Hello all! Been lurking for sometime now while I've been searching for my prius. Now I can proudly say I am a new owner of a used 2012 Prius III. Thank you to the community for all the help and information!! Drove it home last night and I am in love.

With that being said, I want to do a complete maintenance overhaul on the car.
I can't find anywhere what the official spark plugs are for the car. I don't trust autoshop websites as their data base maybe outdated.

What plugs are you using in your gen 3 prius?!

    Thank you for your reponse!
I did some more googling and found a toyota chart recommending Denso SC20HR11

Whats the difference between this one vs the Denso (4711) IXEH20TT

This is from the Owner's Manual, page 566:

    upload_2017-2-14_10-33-26.png

If you don't have Owner's Manual, you can download pdf format from Toyota TechInfo. Just google that phrase, it'll one of the first few links. Pick the "manuals" tab, fill in your vehicle's details, and search.

If you're using anti-seize (sparingly) on the threads, I would go with 13 foot/pounds torque. Dry threads: 15 ft/lb.

There's a singnificant amount of disassembly needed to get to the plugs. Have a look at @NutzAboutBolts video on spark plug changing, here (pinned at top of 3rd gen maintenance sub-forum):

DIY Auto Projects (formerly Nutz About Bolts) Prius Maintenance Videos | PriusChat

(note, he says 20 ft/lb, I think that's too much, especially with anti-seize applied)

You'll need a 9/16" spark plug socket, btw.

I'll attach some info from the Repair Manual. There's another bit, outlining basically the parts removal in the above linked video, but I haven't separated it out yet, and the video is clearer anyway.

Denso TT is a new and improved version of the original plug design.

    DENSO IRIDIUM TT

Here's the Toyota Spark Plug application chart:
    http://www.toyota.com/toyota-owners-theme/pdf/09_SparkPlugs2015_final[1].pdf

I replaced the original plugs in my 2011 Prius with NGK laser iridiums and have no problems with them. I noticed no difference at all, yet, between the NGKs and original Denso. Therefore, I cannot say how much or if the new TT design from Denso improves performance. If others say they are good, and you are going to stick with Denso, I would go with the TTs.

NGK and Denso often have near-identical offerings. Our Civic Hybrid had 2 plugs per cylinder, and (maybe just for equal billing) used one of each.

Wow this is great information!!! I am definately a DIY kinda person and will use these steps.

I've always been iffy with NGK just because I try to stick with the Denso that Toyota offers. I'll definately be going with the TT's as I'm glad there is a new spark plug version out.

NGK and Denso are the go to brands! Seriously people! Why even bother going with alternatives as it is only a few bucks more.

The car has 120k miles on it and I understand it is that time for a maintenance job. It's a 2012 Clean title and I picked it up for 7900 off craigslist. I am pretty good with my cars so I actually plan on doing a full DIY maintenance overhaul.

    Right now.. the plan is
    • Spark plugs
    • Transaxle fluid change
    • Oil change
    • Brake fluid Flush
    • Coolant Flush
Anything else I should add? About to close my amazon shopping cart =D

I'll definitely check the brakes and filters.

What do I have to do with the PCV? Thank you for the info! I thought I did enough reading haha.

I'll be sure to check it out anyways! I just found some details on it.

I'm actually confused now. There are two types of coolant right? The inverter coolant and the ICE coolant. Do both of these use the same type of fluid?

Wow.. thank you everyone for help! These responses are amazing and I'm loving the community so far. I just bled the brakes on my 1999 toyota 4runner and hope the process is the same with a "hybrid" vehicle. I understand that prius have regenerative braking so I'm not sure if it makes a difference.

I be using a motive power bleeder with DOT 3 fluid. This pressure bleeder shouldn't damage the regenerative braking system correct?

Without techstream software you need to put the car in "invalid mode" via a chicken dance involving brake pedal and shift positions. Then you can bleed per conventional car. Watch @NutzAboutBolts video (same place), and I'll post repair Manual info later.

Fwiw I used syringe with thin tube extension (to baste fluid out of reservoir), tubing with bleed valve grommet at end, mayo jar with hole in lid, 8 and 10 mm wrench, and 2 pints Toyota dot 3.

And some help from my wife, pushing brake pedal, per video.

when you're in the brakes, lubricate the caliper slide pins.

    More info for brake bleed:

Invalid Mode procedure, for brake bleed without techstream):

    set parking brake
without foot on brake, press start button twice
foot on brake, shift to Neutral
press brake 8 times in 5 seconds
    push park button
press brake 8 times in 5 seconds
foot on brake, shift to Neutral
press brake 8 times in 5 seconds
    push park button
(car should exhibit blinking brake symbol, indicating in "invalid mode", for brake bleeding without techstream)

    Bleed sequence:

    Front Right
    Front Left
    Rear Left
    Rear Right

Note, watch the nutzaboutbolts video, to get a feel for bleeding front vs rear. Front brakes you have to be very careful, bleed in short spurts. The rears, assistant can just press-and-hold the brake pedal, pump activates, and pumps out lots of fluid.

Make note of where fluid is in reservoir at the outset, and aim to end up at same level. Leave yourself a bit of fluid in reserve, for recheck a day or two later.

Some brake info from Repair Manual attached:
