2013 dead battery

The 12 V battery in a Prius follows the same "rules" as one in any other vehicle.

Yes but that doesn't mean that 60% is all it is capable of.
Charge it up good and then let it sit for 24 hours and take another reading.

Given your reported usage, connecting a tender once a month (at least) for 24 hours would be good.
Allowing it to sit at 60% for long periods will cause it to age prematurely.

 

Doing that very often causes you to miss the early warning signs of the battery going bad.
It will ensure that it starts fine in your garage every time.
It also makes it likely that it will finally "die" some place ELSE, which is a lot less convenient.

 

I’m using a CTEK 4.3 charger. According to manufacturer’s FAQ #1 it’s ok.

You aren't understanding what I am trying to tell you.
It makes NO difference what tender you use.

Having it on a tender ALL THE TIME will ensure that it has enough charge to make the vehicle run every time you disconnect the tender and start it.

BUT......at some point in time, the battery will fail and have a severe loss of capacity. Having it connected to a tender will cover up that event in the convenient environment of your garage.......usually......and the total failure will occur some place ELSE at the other end of your trip.

If you still don't understand, then just stop because I don't think I can explain it any better.

I just changed the battery in my Spyder last week......and noticed that the owners manual recommends connecting a tender type charger for 24 hours any time it will (or has) sit unused for 2 weeks or more.

 

So. What you SEEM to be saying: even GOOD batteries (which we've started with...we people who use battery maintainers because we don't use the car all that much) will eventually fail, even if they are kept charged?

Yes. Absolutely.
Taking good care of them will make them last longer........but not forever.

A good AGM battery in a vehicle that is driven often OR kept charged by periodic use of a small charger or tender might be expected to last up to 7 years, sometimes a bit more.....but living in a VERY hot climate can reduce that some.

One that is not driven often and otherwise neglected can be expected to last maybe 4 or 5 years; sometimes less.

Well unless your magic meter is putting a significant load on it when measuring volts......that really isn't that good for an AGM.

Under no load, it should be at least 12.8 or 12.9 if really healthy and fully charged.

I just got a new one for my motorcycle last week and the construction must have been improved a little because it reads 13.1 fully charged with no load after sitting overnight.

 

They are tracking and speed logging devices sometimes used by insurance companies to lower your rates. Sometimes people use them to track their kids or spouse. The obd2 connector is also where any mechanic would check for trouble codes and live data. So your first $100 diagnostic mechanic either did nothing or was clueless about what could be eating power.

OK but it was getting power from the car somehow......right ?
And likely was "hot" all the time.
Which would discharge the battery while the car is not running.
