    UPDATE
    Thanks again for the input!

After weighing in all the options discussed here I listed the V on Craigslist for $5k on Saturday. Did a full walk-around video with start-up. Took lots of photos. Listed dealership's diagnosis with error codes and white smoke, etc.

Within 40 seconds I got a bunch of e-mails. People offering $6500 cash. I wasn't expecting that many hits and we weren't prepared to make a sale, ie we couldn't find the title! So I pulled the Craigslist ad while we applied for a replacement title.

Then I thought, what if it's in the pile of dealer service receipts in the glovebox...and it was. Not the smartest place to put your title :)
Re-listed and sold the car the next day $6k cash.

Quickest craigslist sale I've ever made. Strangest thing though (as with any Craigslist buyer)...several buyers warned me that people would simply buy my Prius, clear the check engine light and re-sell it....and I (seller) would "be in trouble".

So, with 205,480 miles we said farewell to the Prius. I look back and I must commend Toyota on a great product that served us well for 9 years.

ps..we paid $27k for Prius in 2013. I'm stunned that you can still buy a decent commuter car in 2022 for under $30k.

    That's awesome!
Got some good $$$ and just in time.
Brakes master cylinder , water pump, traction battery all can go at any time with 200,000 miles.

As long as you have a decent bill of sale with "sold as is" and report the sale to the state you are covered. Last time I sold a Prius I made the guy go to his insurance agent and buy insurance in front of me.

Plenty of things a shady flipper could do but its then on him.

Absolutely factored those points of failure into our decision. Another point of amazement...we never had to change the brake pads over 200k miles!

Does anyone else do the headgaskets that you know of? I tried contacting Gasketmasters on their website and never heard back. I saw on this site once someone that does it in northern NY, but I can't find the link again :(

I would go to South Main Auto in Avoca, NY. You might have to wait a few weeks.

According to Gasketmasters' website, Tampa Hybrids is their only licensee outside of CA, so they won't be able to help you. And lots of small hybrid shops don't have the training for that kind of work, so they might be hard to find.

If no one here knows of a shop in NY (a more specific location would sure be helpful), I guess I would call around and if they say know, ask if they know someone who does. If that doesn't work, I guess it's either YouTube, or sell i the car as is. It's not a super hard job, but it is very involved and there are lots of things to screw up. So I wouldn't let just anyone have at it.

edit to add: Thanks @rjparker. You're quick!

Not sure how sure how close this guy is:

South Main Auto LLC, 47 S Main St, Avoca, NY 14809, United States

    He's quite a YouTube presence.

^ @rjparker just beat me to it, lol.

Well I saw this youtube video of theirs that said they are traveling the country including NY:

I'm in central, NY and have called at least 8 shops. No one will touch a head gasket. lol most say it's a hybrid I don't want to get electrocuted! To top it off the last machine shop I knew about in the area closed down to make way for a new hospital.

I've watched the rebuild process on youtube, it's too involving for me to tackle without a garage and the last time I rebuilt an engine I was 15 and it was on a tractor :)

Thanks guys! Not too far, a couple of hours away. I'll call on Tuesday. Maybe that's where I saw them, youtube.

Yes, but we don't do mobil repairs. LOL! Too bad Krall lives so far away.

Nice! I didn't know they travelled that far.

Those shops that are afraid of getting electrocuted on a HG repair are good places to avoid since they don't know anything about hybrids.

Has anyone used South Main Auto? I’ve left them 2 messages and called 5 times over the last 2 weeks and they never answer or call back.

Do you guys know anyone else in the area for head gaskets?

Thanks! I forgot about them because I did try to contact them first on their website but also didn’t hear back. I’ll lookup their number.

I just experienced the hg problem on a 2012 Prius. Changed spark plugs, injectors and egr before I resigned myself to a hg failure. Traded on a 2013 Prius v with 65,000 miles. Dealer only gave $750 for my 12. Hoping to get more than the 250,000 miles I got on my old Prius. Will try to keep egr system maintained this time and try to avoid hg failure. Great car while it lasted as was my 2008 before.

Most toys not giving up on at 200,000.
U usually hit another 150,000 plus with minor repairs. Except for the Gen 3 and their junk headgasket and master cylinder setup.
Definitely not the famed toy reputation that I experienced before I bought a hybrid.

It’s water under the bridge in your case, but I would fix the car at a shop first and sell it running to net thousands instead of $750.

I would be very careful with the “new” 2013 v. Same problems in a nicer package. Coolant, oil and brake fluid changes immediately for the hg and brake booster followed by extensive carbon cleanup throughout. The hv battery is due as well.
