Just purchased my prius. Has 69000 miles on it. I drive the interstate 40 miles one way. So, 2 days of work i have a mpg of barely 30. No wind, temp high 30's, 95 % flat. Speed ave 75mph.
do i need to take it into the shop?
I know it says 40 highway as an estimate. This is far from that!

Highway is not measured by the EPA at a sustained 75MPH.

I get 42+ at 67 on a 40 mile route repeated often in the summer, and just got 38+ at 70-72 in 40 degree colder weather on the same route. You can see my 4 years plus average from the fuelly signature below.

Tire pressures matter too. Check your pressures and inflate to maybe 3 more than Toyota recommends and see how that feels to you and what your MPG figures out to be.

And what MPG did you get on the car that you drove before the v on the same route and speeds? Now compute the savings.

My wife drives our '14 we got new, she drives 50+ miles round trip to/from work. 1/3 suburban miles, 2/3 freeway post rush hour. She gets around 49-50mpg.

Tire pressure is 44/22, front to rear, drive speed tops 65mph, tires original at 42% usable tread life now. Oil 0w-20 Mobil synthetic and judicious use of pulse and glide.

Low tire pressure and high speeds will conspire against high gas mileage. Check your oil level/condition, tire pressure and condition (if original, it's at end of life). Check tires for irregular wear, shocks for wear, tire balance, and wheel alignment. Other may suggest more, but this a start. Good luck.

Also, depending on where you live, in winter the gas gets reformulated and that can affect mileage. Likewise at your cars miles, little things like the injectors cleaning and the plus change.

how are you calculating mpg's? have you done a full tank yet, and refilled, dividing miles by gallons pumped?
if so, start looking at things like oil level, air filter, tire brand and model, 12v battery and etc., they can all affect mpg's.
also, reset the trip meter and do a long run at 55 mph just to see what you get.

I'm sure that 44/22 is a typeing error. More likely 44/42.
