2015 Prius c vs. 2015 Fit

    The Prius c has been updated for 2015 with new bumpers, standard Bi-LED headlamps, available LED foglamps, refreshed interior and mostly holds its price. The 2015 Fit is all new from the ground up with a 1.5 litre direct injection engine putting out 130hp through a 6-spd manual or new CVT. 33/41/36 city/hwy/combined for the LX CVT and 32/38/35 for the EX & EX-L CVT. 29/37/32 for the 6M if anyone's curious.

    Of course the Fit has Honda's Magic Seat for fantastic flexibility and the LX model at US$15,650 (Cdn$17,375. Canada does have a DX model starting at $14,575 that has no A/C or heated front seats or auto up/down power windows) is very well equipped for someone who wants a basic, but with modern functionality transportation (including automatic headlights, multi-angle backup camera and bluetooth streaming audio). If you want an upscale feel, the EX and EX-L will add features like moonroof, leather, foglights, 7" screen, LaneWatch, alloys.

    US$20,925 (Cdn$21,375) for a loaded Fit EX-L w/ navigation & HD Traffic. A Prius c Two starts at $20,340. A Prius c Three starts at $21,765 which includes Entune Premium Audio w/ navigation (and a high resolution 6.1" screen vs. the Fit's 800x480 resolution 7" screen).


    The Prius c has its work cut out for it. I haven't sat in the 2015 Fit yet so I can't say if the interior materials and workmanship are better or worse than the Prius c. While it's not 50mpg combined (or 53mpg in the city), buyers will weigh the pros/cons btwn 50mpg or getting a few more features. A backup camera is finally available on the Prius c but only on the Four trim level at US$24,475 (Cdn$26,055).

    At top trim, it's a US$3,550 (Cdn$4,680) between the Fit EX-L Navigation and the Prius c Four (15" wheels).


    Does the "hybrid" premium seem reasonable now? Or does Toyota need to worry about the Fit? Discuss.

    At 100,000 miles the Civic will have used about 1,000 gal. more gas than the PC.

    I think somebody who is in the market for a Hybrid will only get the C. When I was in the market for the C, I did compare other cars but all of them were hybrids. The Fit did not even come on the list.

    I was down to the 2014 Prius C or the 2015 Fit late last year. I followed the fit freaks forum for weeks prior to as well as this one. The limited availability (at the time) of the Fit, plus some concerns I perceived with the Fit being assembled in a new plant in Mexico for the 2015 model year were what persuaded me to go with the C2. Haven't looked back since.

    Fit LX auto is about $17K and Prius c Two is $18.4K. If I'm driving on the freeway a lot, then I'd choose the Fit. The mileage difference between the two is less on the freeway, and it would take 7-15 years in fuel savings to cover the price difference assuming $3.50/gallon. Plus, I'd get more useable interior, better driving dynamics, and superior crash scores being the newer design.

    For city driving, that's where the Prius c can make its money back much faster, in which case it's a more compelling vehicle to consider. I'd probably still buy the Fit though.

    We tried the fit back in 2012 before getting the C. They were both very nice, but being a hybrid, the C is quieter when it's in EV mode. In stop and go, the engine isn't even on when not moving.

    The Fit looks sportier on the inside and has a tighter cockpit feel. Some people don't like that. My wife equated that with "cramp" and "small".

    Both are very comparable on paper. Final decisions will be based on style, personality and budget.

    For us, when comparing something that obviously has a technology edge (hybrid, vs traditional i.c.e.), what we did was treat the hybrid premium as optional equipment (like leather heated seats). With that in mind and working with a set price point, we compared a well equipped Fit to the C One and chose something with projected lower maintenance costs, and saved time by not going to the gas station as often.

    Almost forget to mention that in California, hybrids are exempt from Smog checks. So, in 5 years, the Fit will require a smog check every other year, while the C won't need a smog check (ever).

    Depends on your drive. If you do a lot city driving, C is good for u.

    I am doing a bit more on hwy, 110-120 60% everyday and my C has 5.5L/100KM. Yes, winter is cold. I expect under 5 during summer.

    If you stick with 100-110 kph speeds you'd see a significant increase in you mpg or lpg. I can hit 52mpg in my CT200h on particularly bad commutes in which I can't go above 62mph. The C does even better with the same commute.

    36 combined vs 50 ? I drive about 30 miles to get home, today I got 60.8mpg. I don't even think it's a contest and just wait until gas goes back up. Here in Denver Co I got a couple offers to buy a brand new C2 out the door for $20,500. I ended up with a used 2013 C4 for the same price.

    In fairly even mixed driving our 2013 AT Honda Fit lifetime fuel economy is just under 40 MPG. This is quite a bit higher than reported by e.g. Fuelly, but perhaps that is explained by the demographic that usually buys the Fit.

    Speaking only for my family, we picked the Fit over the Prius 'c' for two reasons:
    • We expected to drive it ~ 5000 miles a year
    • I thought it would be easier to sell in 2-3 years, meaning less absolute depreciation.
    At the time, I avoided the 2015 Honda Fit because of the Mexican manufacture and I do not regret my decision although so far I have not heard of serious issues. On paper at least, the 2015 is a very attractive upgrade over prior years.

    Well, that stinks...

    Looks like my next car will be an EV sometime in 2017.

    Let them ask for smog with an EV.

    NP I was bummed out hearing about it. I have another 2 years before the 5 year mark to get my notification for smog.

    The nice thing is the smogs on newer cars don't need dynos. It all just a plug in test.
