2015 v need an oil catch can

    I've got a 2015 Prius v Three with 60k miles. I've been reading the threads about adding an oil catch can and the EGR cleaning. As I understand, my v should have the re-designed rings to help with some of the issues including blow-by into the crankcase. Is the oil catch can as necessary for my v as it is with vehicles before the re-design?
    I assume cleaning my EGR system around 100k is still a good idea. It doesn't seem like the piston ring change would affect the EGR plugging?

    Yes you're right about that. At least based on info I see at McGeorge Toyota, the pistons and rings for various Prius v years:

    Still, revised pistons and rings are primarily to reduce oil consumption. Also, the jury's out at how effective they are at that. An argument could be made that replacing pistons and rings on an earlier year v, with the same pistons and rings (but brand new), would equally solve the oil consumption problem, at least for 100K miles or so.

    To determine if an Oil Catch Can is warranted, remove the intake air box, connecting hose to the throttle body, and push open the blade to see through. You'll very likely see a shiny pool lurking down there. Unbolting and lifting off the throttle body (you can leave coolant hoses attached) will give you a better view.

    Thanks Mendel and Ray, I pulled the throttle body hose and pushed open the butterfly valve in the throttle body and saw a puddle of oil so I guess I should do the OCC. I have no issues with oil consumption or rough running at this point. Do you think I need to to do the OCC now or can it wait till I do the 100k maintenance (including the EGR cleaning)?

    I’ll be looking into this for our 2019 Prime soon, and that only has 900 miles on it:).

    Thanks Ray. I've read the threads on which OCC to buy and where to mount it and they are all over the place (bad pun intended). Has any consensus developed on which to buy and where to mount it?

    I’ll probably go Ruein style and mount it low again:).

    But I haven’t looked how crowded the Prime underside is to facilitate that;).

    But if I mount high, there is available real estate all over the engine bay:

    So I might end up going high depending(y).

    I’ve often wondered if an ultrasonic device at the end of the egr would atomize the oil so it could safely burn without the chug and break if a pool

    Link or device you’re thinking of:whistle:?

    It’s a tight area and on the Prime and gen4’s, it looks even worse:cool:.

    So most devices won’t fit.
