I have a Gen4 2016 Prius with 116K miles that just experienced a Hybrid system malfunction. After the error came on the dash, I kept driving a few more miles but then the 12volt battery voltage became too low and the car refused to drive any further. I had it towed to the dealer and they spent 2 days (and a $500 diagnosis fee) trying to diagnose the problem, then they called me and said the inverter failed and it would cost almost $4,600 to install a new inverter. Could their diagnosis be wrong? I know Gen3 Prius had issues with the inverters but I thought they fixed it for the newer models. Has anyone else experienced this issue? What would cause a 2016 inverter to fail at only 115K miles?

Anything can fail, but the usual cause of an inverter failure is connecting a 12v battery backwards when jumping the Pius or replacing the battery.

a reasonable mech can throw in a salvage inverter for a few hundred dollars.

but first, ask for the codes from the dealer, and post them here. this is a very unusual failure.

Thats horrible news. Like Bisco said maybe call around to a few other Prius repair shops or see if they can install a used inverter. The only thought I could think of is that there was an issue with the wires going into the inverter and there was a TSB for that where they taped them up to protect them from rubbing and failing.

If you live in California or other carb states it should be covered by the emission warrantee. Also I thought Toyota did 150,000 or 10 year warranty on hybrid system. I would check around.
