2016 Prius 20% improvement in MPG?

    I'd heard that, guess you're right, but it does boggle the mind: fhe fox guarding the hen house? I wonder why? I mean, government crash tests the cars, right? You'd think it would be easy to run independent fuel economy tests on those vehicles first.

    Also, just editorial: "mileage" should read "mpg" or "fuel consumption"?

    The EPA will spot check about 10% of the models of a given year. New models, and high outliers are likely to be picked, so expect the new Prius to be EPA tested. The limit on how many they test has been funds. Their testing facility went years with out a 4WD dyno.

    I believe fines go into the general fund.

    Toyota also said 18% in European spec... of course under European rules... which is perfectly believable since current Auris and Yaris got better MPG than 2009 Prius, so it is around 8-9% better than latest Yaris Hybrid with Prius c powertrain.

    May very well be. But it has been said that the Euro spec is weighed more towards city driving.

    So possible to get 18% city increase with EPA and less on highway. Hoping we will see combined ~18% increase here.

    For the same reason C has higher rating on non-EPA as Gen3 and opposite on EPA.

    Prius C has the same rating as Gen 3 on EPA. (4% better in town and 4% worse on highway offset)
    Comparing the same car on the City vs Highway tests. The Prius C varies approx. 14% and the Gen 3 varies approx. 6%

    Prius C: 7 mpg difference between the two tests = 14% of 50 mpg
    Gen 3: 3 mpg difference between the two tests = 6% of 50 mpg
