1493155544535.jpg After just a short time of owning my prius I got a huge crack on my windshield from very tiny rock that hit it . I have seen about 6 other prius with the same kind of long crack on the road and I was wondering if any other 2016 prius owners are having this problem ?

Geez, get on that right away: not just a simple crack, looks like that whole section could pop out, or in.

Just technical curiousity: is that an iPhone picture, or something else? There has got to be some consensus on phone image orientation compatibility. I know my iPhone is bad for mis-rotation, if I copy over to my pc. I have my methods to fix, but it's a pain.

    Umm.
Why is this in the "In Memoriam" section? Is the Prius dead??

Mods: Thanks for moving this where others will find it.

Agreed - it looks like a serious break. Remember that the windscreen is a structural part of the car.

My theory is that the aerodynamic design of the Prius means it lacks the bow wake that typically less aerodynamic vehicles have. That bow wake resembles an upward flow of air towards the nose of the car that helps stones, bugs and other airborne debris change course as they cross into it. Without it the car produces much less drag but has a tendency to have rocks hit the windshield. Happened to me and the glass shop owner told me he sees a disproportionate number of prii come in for replacement windshields.

There are aftermarket deflectors that you often see mounted on the leading edge of semi tractor, pickup truck, and some other vehicle's hoods. This may help but may also increase drag.

What a coincidence!! I had a crack in my windshield that went across the car this week! I replaced it on Wednesday and it's as good as new. However, the installer said I have to recalibrate the camera that is used for the safety features:(. I took it to the dealer today and they said it would take 7 hours! Going in another day. I'm gonna post a thread on it soon to get a second opinion...

My Insurance doesn't include windscreens - I'd opted out to save money. BUT - if the camera needs recalibration, I better restore Windscreen cover to my insurance. Or continue to accept the risk.

Add me to the list of broken windshield owners! Had mine replaced last month and the camera re-calibrated last week. I was given an estimate of $850 for the windshield (I have HUD), and $580 for the camera re-calibration. If I didn't have it covered under insurance, would have cost $1,430 USD to have all repairs done.

I appreciate the info you tech pioneers are providing. Makes me wonder about some of these items. Radar cruise and the various proximity sensors have similar impact , on "bumper" repair.

The point had been raised over here about the excessive insurance repair costs on the latest auto technology. Yet another excuse for raising insurance premiums!!!

I had my windshield broken last October, after I bought my Prius from dealer 4+ months later.
There are a lot of 2016 prius owner here in Taiwan had their windshield broken too, a disproportional number I think.
I guess it might be a design to protect pedestrians if accident happens?( Of course, not to protect your wallet...)

By the way, replacing the windshield of 2016 prius costs 500~600 USD in Taiwan.

I wonder if there were windshield changes for 2017.
My wife had our Prius out last night and got caught in a storm with quarter-sized hail. She said she was surprised the windshield did not break.
It was dark when she got home, so we will need to check for hail damage today. :(

I encourage all of you guys to submit a complaint on the NTHSA website. I submitted my complaint and Toyota contacted me to offer a free windshield so they can test my broken one for safety issues.

    File a Vehicle Safety Complaint | Safercar.gov | NHTSA

That is where I went to file a complaint for the 2016 toyota prius and I selected visibility/wiper and I suggest you all do the same

I hate for this to be my first post but the windshield on my 2017 Prius Three also cracked when a tiny rock hit the lower left side below the inspection sticker.

As I was driving on the highway I could see the crack getting longer until it nearly reached the middle. It took almost two minutes.

Geico referred me to SafeLite which is costing about $410. The Toyota dealership wanted about $1,200 and gave a story about not going "aftermarket." And I was also told about needing recalibration.

I'm going to cancel that appointment and file the complaint.

I feel owners should not have to put up with this expensive and dangerous defect.
