It’s not about money for us, it’s all about mpg. When the time comes, I’ll delve in as deeply as possible.
I do like the ride of our current wheels

Yep, instead setting the max gear the automatic can shift to, it sets the amount of engine and transmission braking done on the car for the hybrid. In terms of a Prius, it is variable level B 'gear'.

You have the ability for it on the LE, but just through the gear shift when it is in the S position. Not only does the paddles make it more convenient, but you also do the shifting while in D.

Yeah if I pull the gearshift to the left I can "shift" but I don't really use that feature. It seems more efficient to use regenerative braking than engine braking.

I down shift to control speed on down slopes. Many here would quickly fill the battery of the 2005 Prius when sticking to just regen.

What a difference a day makes. Managed 56 MPG on the way to work in 25 degree temps. I suspect being garage kept helped this figure from being lower. Got a dismal 49 MPG displayed on the way home with temps in the upper teens. This in spite of driving conservatively like I have been for the last several days.

This is quite a drop in both temps and MPGs!

And yet my news feed has been full of articles on how BEVs lose range in the cold.

I bet they do. The cold stiffens the lubricants and makes the car harder to push.

Mileage is on the upswing thanks to a few things, namely warmer weather, leaving for work 5 minutes sooner, and turning off the climate control unless it is really needed.

    New tank:

    57.6 MPG displayed tank
    55.9 MPG lifetime displayed
    14,240 OD

So I've perhaps learned something new just recently. It seems that if one leaves the climate control off and does not exceed 10 MPH the Camry will take longer to turn on.

Previously in cooler weather I couldn't get out of the parking lot before the engine would kick on. I think part of the reason was that I'd exceed 10 MPH. Today I got a good way down the road but it was warmer so that may not be the whole truth. Still it seems like the 10MPH thing is real. More is testing needed to know for sure.

Under 10 MPH is not a very practial speed range to be useful but it is still interesting to discover.

It is probably there for the same reason the original Prius had an EV button, to allow the car to moved between parking spots, out of the garage for the mower, or not disturb neighbors.

that's exactly how ours works. it's mostly useless, but if the car is warm enough, you can move it in or out of the garage without the engine starting.
driving it in ev will only kill your mpg's

I noticed the last time I was in the dealers showroom how upscale the new Camry's are now, especially the interior.

There is about 900 miles of highway driving spread out between the next 2 tanks.

Displayed mileage was not very good, perhaps 47 MPG displayed at 70 MPH in fairly warm weather but not warm enough to need AC.
