2019 Prius PHV

    Greetings! I'm stationed in Japan and I've been hearing gossip that the 2019 Prius PHV or Prime (For those back in the states) will have better battery acceleration and range. While these sound like obvious improvements, I wanted to know if anyone has heard anything else about the 2019 model?

    The reason I'm holding off on a 2018 model is because I want to get the GR package which is only available in Japan. Therefore, I want a sporty looking Prime with an engine that will feel sporty. I don't think we'll ever get a ludicrous mode but here's hoping that Toyota caters to the crowd that likes the Prius PHV/Prime for it's looks and don't mind giving up on MPG savings.

    Seems the only visual difference are the plastic bumper covers and wheels. What else is known in the current GR package other than sportier seats, pedals, and a tach? For $37K, l'd expect more.

    Nothing from our end. The focus has been on Corolla and RAV4. We'll probably shift to Prius some time in the summer as we know the midlife update is coming up.

    We're also speculating if the Prime will get the 2.0 litre HSD from the Auris (or maybe the Prius Touring models). It's unlikely but worth dreaming about.

    A longer range is always welcome. I guess an improved chemistry will allow greater charge/discharge for better acceleration?

    From what I can see, it adds

    • Aggressive front bumper with silver GR Sports bar
    • Smoked headlight housing
    • GR Sports rear bumper with integrated rear foglight
    • Blacked out mirrors
    • Body-colour C-pillar cover
    • Clear LED taillights cover with smoked housing
    • Gunmetal finished 18" alloys
    • Black leather/ultrasuede seats with silver accents. Front seats have GR sport embroidering
    • Ultrasuede covered front/rear centre console box lids
    • Sport small diameter steering wheel
    • Ultrasuede-wrapped instrument cluster base (it's plastic on your car)
    • Black shift knob (instead of the blue)
    • Brushed silver accents (instead of the piano black accents) on dashboard, front doors and rear doors
    • Aluminium sport pedals
    • GR Sport push button start
    • Tachometer

    If the GR package is only available in Japan, wouldn't it also come with right hand drive?

    We are expecting at some point the 5 seat option, perhaps as higher price...2020 I suppose?

    Why not leave the 5th seat for wider hybrids... like Camry and the upcoming Prius V replacement?

    Diversity is vital for market growth.

    yes, perhaps would be better served with convertible child seat/center console between the rears.

    I can't imagine sitting on the center console would be comfortable for anyone's rear.

    Following. Would be interested to hear if the 2019 Prime offers >30 miles electric range (seems like WA state offers poss tax incentives for vehicles w/ >30 miles on electricity) and a larger trunk to boot.

    Just saying 5-seats was announced by Toyota a few years ago, that was coming. So the questions is, still true?

    They stated it would be looked into as an option. That's it. No delivery promise.

    With sales tax over 10% in much of the state, a 30 mile EPA electric range to qualify for that EV sales tax waiver would be a very big deal here. The current Prime doesn't qualify.

    Thanks all for the reply. Guess there is only so much info that would be released. My friend works for Toyota and while he can't tell me whats next for obvious reasons, he did slip up a few times during our numerous conversations about electric cars. Guess I will hold off for the better range and powerful engine then.

    The Macintosh world has a similar problem: but the Mac today to solve a current problem or wait for the new one?

    So I bought the discounted, refurbished one and never looked back.

    So the BMW was in the shop four days for a software update, intermittent fuel pressure, and slow leaking tire. In the meantime, I drove the Prime

    Having dealt with the ambiguous statements from GM so many times over the years, paying very close attention exactly what's said really pays off.

    The rest is just plain old business logic. Change can be time-consuming expensive. And rarely do you have all the facts about how decisions were made.

    I personally like the idea of Prime being closer aligned "loaded feature" consumers and the larger Prius, Camry, RAV4, etc. to the larger general audience.
