    Hello PriusChat forum!

The 2007 Prius I own is quickly coming up on it's 100,000 mile mark and I went ahead and contacted a local Bay Area shop, which I was referred to from this forum, Luscious Garage in SF. I wanted to see which services they would do and it's cost.

I was startled when I opened up their email this morning and to see the estimated cost at $724. o_O

I quickly grabbed all my belongings and started to sell anything I could to afford this service, even this laptop I'm typing on....just kidding. I first looked at all the things they quoted me for as well as looking at the Prius Maintenance Manual. I searched other threads as well regarding the '100k service' for 2nd Gens and had a look at those.

I decided to reconnect here and get others opinions to see which things I could save money and DIY and which things I should hand over to a shop.

There's a potential upcoming 'Prius Meetup' nearby, which I could potentially work on more things there; I don't have many tools at my place, but I do like to do 'DIY stuff', plus I can always borrow tools.

Here's a link to the Prius Meetup thread if you're interested:

    "The Estimate "

I think it would be a bit lengthy and wordy if I typed all the parts and labor services they estimated me for, so I've gone ahead and took 'snapshots' of the estimate and have uploaded them below.

The labor is being estimated at around $500 and the parts to be around $230.

The most expensive parts seem to be the Aisin Water Pump ($78) and the "Toyota SuperLong Life Anti-freeze" ($93).

    - - -

Luckily the car has been taken care of and well-maintained from the experience I've had driving it for the past half-year.

I've done the regular oil changes and replaced the spark plugs and filters a few weeks ago; I'm going to have to recheck the spark plugs, because I'm hearing some "rattling" from time to time at certain RPM's, but that's for another thread, which has already been created here from another member. (y)

Anyways, thanks for taking the time to read this and giving your opinions and advice.

** edit : forgot to upload the snapshots; I've added them to the 4th post I made down below

Done the water pump on an 07 before, the pain is the coolant filling:(.

    But we got you covered(y).

Bisco, I didn't have the maintenance manual or owners manual by hand when I typed this thread, but the estimate included what was on the maintenance manual plus some.

You bring the Parts (and your willing labor), we’ll have the tools:).

I bet you’ll find your labor rate to be a bit more tolerable ;).

    See you soon(y).

for those who can't or don't want to, it seems like a reasonable price for expert service.

I don't consider that unreasonable at all. $700 gets you another 100,000 miles. That's nothing.

luscious is well-respected, but am I missing something?

Why would you replace the water pump -- just because?

I DID have to replace mine at around 65k, but I would not replace it if there is no problem.

Dealer charged me $450 USD for the water pump in 2014 (?).

The 100K service is nothing. It's the 120k that is the big one.

See if I've got it, the main points:

    1. Engine oil and filter change
    2. Engine coolant change
    3.Inverter coolant change
    4. Engine coolant pump replacement
    5. Drive belt replacement
    4. 4 wheel brake inspection

$724 is a good price for all that.

Parts pricing with a bit of patience is an even better value proposition (y).

@cyberpriusII , I wasn't sure why they included the water pump as well, but I figured they knew more than me, especially since I was referred to them from here.

The key word is PREVENTATIVE maintenance.

The water pump is at least 11 years old if his Prius was assembled in 2007. Possible to be 12 years old if assembled in 2006. This part will require replacement, just when: premptively, when it is leaking critically, or is the cause of leaving him broken down.

OP would be pissed as hell/annoyed if the water pump started to fail a short period after getting serviced. Now he would be inconvenienced again, to get the water pump serviced, when it could have been replaced during the initial service.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Would suck for the water pump to be the cause of a stranding, when the replacement cost is relatively cheap.

Yes there are some people who replace the water pump only when it begins to show signs of needing replacementv and they get every cent out of the water pump.

Not to mention having to buy coolant again shortly after he/she paid for a coolant replacement.

    Sorry.

I am as circumspect as the next person. Probably more so.

But the ain't broke don't fix motto has worked for me for a long time.

It is seldom that a WP fails catostrophically --- well -- I cannot spell that word, but normally it gives some sign. Weeping or something. It does not usually just fly to pieces -- although -- it can.

IF the pump is showing signs, fine.

If not, shoo, there are all sorts of things you can replace, just "because."

Oh, the battery averages say the 12v should fail at 5 years. Better replace now, even though it looks good and is 4.5 years old.

Oh, tires usually last only 40k. These look good, but they are at 39.5K.

Not trying to be a jerk, but...you could go around the whole car and replace lots of parts just "because."

Of course, if you have $$ to burn....

As an aside, my Camry 12.v battery lasted 12 years. The water pump is still the original at 15 years.

Being a good garage, I suspect there IS A REASON they said to replace it. The OP just did not hear it.

    FYI -

Not the same model or service, but I used Art's Automotive in Berkeley, another Prius specialist, for the 60K service on my 2012 Prius Plug-in and paid the following:

60K mile service by Art’s Automotive + oil change $268

    Transmission Fluid Change $123.50
    ABS Fluid Change $123.50
    Engine Coolant Change $139.25
    Inverter Fluid Change $110.75

Although I did all the previous maintenance myself, I was too busy to do the 60K.

Actually I had the water pump on a car years ago leave me stranded. The front bearing popped out draining all the coolant.
