The 1.8L does just fine for me in a '12 v with 36k with almost all as me driving. I'm not a laggard from the stop light (sold a Porsche to buy the v), I pass cars on the 70MPH interstates, I carry 3 plus driver and luggage into the mountains with luggage. I get EPA while using no special tricks to max the MPG. If I wanted a faster (hmm...first I typed in "fatser") I could lose 6-8 MPG with a RAV4 If I wanted more space I could get a HyPacifica and lose even more. Hits the sweet spot for me.

That is true for the US v, but as a 7-seater that may be too much to ask for from a 1.8HSD. Trust me, I owned a Gen 3 Prius and I only made that assessment after driving the hyCam 2.5HSD for 3 straight months. Maybe that's why the v never really sell in great numbers here in Australia, certainly not as much as the old Avensis with a 2.4 Camry engine.

That could work. That's the Avensis Verso however. The Avensis (no "verso") is actually an estate or hatchback and it is available in hybrid form in the UK.

Ok yes it's not a 7-seater. But it's pretty stylish for an estate!

I think it'll take some time for the U.S. to come around/warm up to an MPV.

In the US, the car has to "do it all". So an MPV which does either all passengers or some passengers and some cargo doesn't fit in the mindset here. (which is why we have "minivans" we are no longer "mini". They're sized to fit 7 people AND luggage at the same time).

    Chrysler had the 6-seater Pacifica

Mercedes had the 6-seater R-Class and Mazda offered the 6-seater Mazda5 (Premacy).

They are all no longer for sale.

Kia still does the 5 or 7 passenger Rondo but I don't know if it'll carry on once the Niro gets here.

duno ... the extra 300-ish Lbs wieght it lugs around, & crappier drag CD might be an equally contributing factor.

Did US and Canadian people get more spoiled? People or luggage sounds like the old station wagons we used to have. Especially the models that had seats th the cargo area.

Like people worrying about an economy car being underpowered .
Not too long ago an economy car might be lucky to break 50hp.

The Prius could have a v-twin for all I care.

My favorite car was a twin cylinder w/ 25hp, use common sense and everything is fine.

Not sure. The "4x8 sheet of plywood" used to be the measurement standard for minivans. I haven't heard that used in a review of a minivan lately.

The 1G Mazda6 wagon was pretty stylish.

Because it has been replaced by the 60" flat screen TV measurement standard?

The pics are from the Auris, same as Corolla in some markets.
    Avensis is more Camry sized.

D'oh! You're right. Oops . That is the Auris Touring Sports Hybrid.

Well it's a half size up. The Camry is significantly bigger than the Avensis, no? I think the Avensis is closer to a 92-96 North American Camry. or has the Avensis grown in size?

According to Redbook.com.au, the Avensis is smaller (at 4690mm) than the Camry (at 4815) in length... I am not sure about the Corolla Touring length as it is not sold down under, but I suspect it may be closer to the Avensis length than Avensis to the Camry.

Prius is 4540mm so the Avensis is a touch longer.

The NA Corolla sedan measures out 4650mm, significantly longer than the 4330mm Corolla iM (Auris or Corolla sold elsewhere in the world).

So basically our Corolla is the Avensis lol.

So the Prius is shorter than the NA Corolla but provides more passenger room. Being a Liftback provides more cargo room too.

Yup. The Prius has always been shorter than the Corolla of the same era and yet provided more room.

    1) Marketing! Longer, lower, wider, have been the way to transition young cheap car buyers into profitable older car buyers for decades. Once they position themselves as 'Corolla buyers' to make more money off of them you have to make a more expensive (to buy) Corolla.

    2) Safety. Enhanced crumple zones to meet ever more demanding safety tests requires longer space and more exotic materials. Space is cheaper than exotic materials.

Mostly for space. I mean the cars now (Corolla and Camry) are spacious and comfortable cars. The older Corollas were a bit small. The Camry were a decent size 4th Gen onwards. (although even 3rd gen was ok).

The current gen Corolla is downright spacious for its class.

I loved my 1996 Camry, but the 4 cylinder was sluggish. The 2008 Corolla was a little small for us so I got the Prius. My younger son's 2010 Corolls (later generation) did not appear to have much more room than the 2008.
Some of us can barely stand the large ugly black grills on most current Toyota vehicles.
