The PUC is supposed to be non partisan, but its members are selected by the governor and approved by the legislature, so yes the governors in this case Abbot and Perry and the legislatures are responsible. The PUC is responsible for ERCOT and failed miserably.

The PUC holds open meetings on ERCOT, but they have been unresponsive to public comments. All members of the PUC during the crisis resigned in shame. There is obviously a poor record of selecting members. I can't remember how long terms are but there are no term limits.

They just need a big X

...or skip straight to $11 because the digits are narrower?

Your trumped-up story was very specifically about Washington State:
    upload_2022-5-27_8-3-28.png
I did not know that Furnace Creek, in Death Valley National Park, is now in Washington State. Or even within 650 air miles or 800 driving miles of Washington State. Maybe my public school geography was deficient.

Remote tourist traps, with no competition for very considerable distances, have long been high price leaders. Especially those with high transport supply costs and low customer volumes to pay for it. Furnace Creek CA is a prime example of such a remote outpost monopoly. Auburn WA, within the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area, isn't even remotely similar.

The first time I heard about the possibility of $10 gas was in the 80’s, and it came up occasionally ever since.

2019 got mentions of $10 gas and of coarse there are those 2 pesky stations that likely already have $10 gas within the continental US.

Rose tinted glasses have nothing to do with my bemusement, it’s more a case of is this temporary
or are things permanently altered, given trillions of dollars dumped during the shadow bank failures of 2020 I have no doubt we might have a Japanese style lost decade as that influx of cash top loaded right into the wrong hands pushes its way out removing private ownership of various asset classes.

Those who don’t believe we will have inevitable deflation must instead believe half the population can become homeless, both can’t be true at the same time.

    On a liter note. :0
Switching to liters to show rising prices amuses me but would quickly become an aggravating thing given the mixed units.

Ten "1980 dollars" is equal to over 35 "2022 US Dollars"....and the rate at which that gap is widening is accelerating based in no small part on current high fuel prices.

Economists often argue about whether or not a certain amount of inflation is "healthy" but, like meteorologists, economists get paid whether their predictions are accurate or not....at least for a time. ;)

POLITICIANS on the other hand.....KNOW that inflation leads to a much higher certainty of unemployment in their field.

Switching to liters would show lower, not rising prices. For most people, the lower price is what would have the most psychological impact. For those of us that know the rough conversions, it would be of little solace other than being a more logical measuring system.

Maryland's 30 day gas tax holiday came and went...Virginia never got it approved...
Now Maryland is talking about re-starting their gas tax holiday for 90+ days....
Virginia is still considering but seems like repub Gov will probably not get Dem support on it. I noticed on I-70 that all the truckers fill up in Maryland before hitting I-81, when the tax is reduced. So that cuts diesel and truck stop sales in Virginia.

Utility we have Dominion Virginia, and elected officials have approved Dominion to build their own massive off shore wind farm. We will be the only state letting the utility build it, and we ratepayers will pay whatever it costs, because we want to be the leaders in offshore wind.

All the truck drivers are probably a little bit happy about this. Let's try to be compassionate.

apologies for causing feelings that the OP is about $10 gas as becoming a national norm right away - based on one (or more) gas station(s) getting close to $10 right now. A clarification / follow-up post after the OP - mentioned early 1970's gas fluctuating towards $1.00 for the 1st time. Seemed similar. That's all. The 1st handful of $1.00 gas station 'signs' were anomalies brought on by events - as are events ½ century later. So, whether now or then, goings-on for example with Ukraine or Vietnam back then ..... or the USA going off the gold standard - early 70's ..... Vs ever-increasing dollar supplies now - coupled with non-renewables being a finite supply. Causes & effects.
iirc - (& feel free to snarc if wrong) early 1970s average mpg was around 12 MPG. It's more than double that amount now. Yet the supplies must necessarily dwindle, even as more & more vehicles hit the road. Having watched fuel / inflation increase gas costs 8-fold in ~50 yrs of driving - is it really so incredible to ponder when the next 2½ fold will be?

Would it be any cheaper for ratepayers if someone else built the offshore wind farm and sold the power at a profit to the company that has the infrastructure to get it to your business or house?

Our stations are playing a game with gas buddy that the station owner posts a price and then immediately raises it. Half the prices on the site are wrong and were updated 5-12 hours ago

Before 7am the low price in town was $4.13. After 7am today all prices went up $0.30-$0.50 cents a gallon but much of the gas buddy posts are outdated. Same thing seems to be happening everyday for a couple weeks

Most of the states are taking competitive bids from developers who promise a certain $$ rate of electricity, which is reasonable. But the onus is on the developer to build the plants and keep to the costs agreed to. The disadvantage is that, for example, New Jersey has accepted several bids some years ago, but nothing much is happening yet. Virginia is bypassing that bid process and just forging ahead on our own, with the rate payers captive to whatever it costs Dominion, plus profit.

If you own stock in Dominion. you are extremely happy at the prospects for the stock. In general on Wall Street, Virginia is known as chumps paying high profits to Dominion. In other words our state elected officials give Dominion a profitable business model...the other we do in Virginia is give quite nice discount to commercial users, so its the homeowners get the short end of the stick, but they do not care, or even support the offshore wind. What we should do is get more cheaper onshore wind, which would have to be built in PA, WV. MD since we don't have good wind speed here.
