alright, alright, alright. I should have said, "some cars that have 4-wheel disc brakes also have a drum built into the rear disc for parking/emergency brake. Not sure if Prius does as I have never checked."

Really ? What kind would that be ??

I vaguely remember somebody toying with a band around the drive shaft for a year or two, which was a miserable failure, but don't remember ever seeing an extra drum brake.

My old 2001 F-150 had that. I think the Ford Crown Vic had that too.

for a rear disc brake A mini "self actuating dual servo" two shoe drum brake activated by a cable is a very common and desired method of implementing a emergency or parking brake on a rear disc brake equipped car.

The mechanical method of expanding the disc brake caliper is much more prone to failure. The method, I believe, was used on a lot of earlier vintage Corvettes.

Before the days of power booster assisted brakes, manual drum brakes required much less effort to apply because of the "duo servo self-actuating effect."

The front and rear shoes are effective "locked" together in one unit. A slight pressure applied to the leading shoe would "drag" and throw the "locked" unit back against the trailing shoe.

I remember reading an article on a debate in the 1960's between "Smokey" Yunick, the famous race car driver and automotive expert Jan P. Norbye in Popular Science on the merits of each. "Smokey" Yunick advocated the former and Norbye; the latter.

As I recall, the drumless disc parking brake mechanically rotated the pistons of the calipers in their bores.

Many times, the pistons would freeze in the extended position and would not retract due to dust and road debris.

I'll say it again . . . When they ask you if you want a 40000 mile service, ask your service manager what has to be done to keep the warranty valid . . . then watch him squirm at the thought of how much money difference he just lost between what they rip you off versus what you really need.

went back and spoke to them. drum brake for the parking brake. the issue is that (and here is my mistake) i don't want to do business with an organization that i can't trust. i clearly was taken advantage of because i asked for a 40K service believing that means what Toyota recommends. The manager told me, well that is the minimum but the recommended is drum brakes/battery terminals in addition. I asked him recommended by 'who?' ...by the dealer.

live and learn and thank you for replies.

Unless you left the parking brake engaged and drove off, it should have NOT needed adjustment.

They obviously saw you coming and took advantage.

Are they the ONLY Toyota dealer in Athens, Georgia?

If they told you your Prius has drum parking brakes, they lied. The parking brake pushes the piston out for parking.

Didn't the Gen 2 Prius have drums/shoes inside the hub of the rear discs for the handbrake ?

Guess you don't have a drum parking brake, I was mistaken. If not then what did they service.

Forget about asking for a 40k service. There is no such thing. You are just asking to get ripped off. All you need to do to a Prius until you get to 100,000 miles is change your oil, cabin filter and engine air cleaner and rotate the tires. Just look at your Maintenance Schedule Manual.

USA Prii have drums in the rear until the GenIII. IIRC, the rear discs in the back of the European models are like the rear discs that the GenIII have in that the parking brake is part of the calipers. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Not specifically relevant here, but the C also has drums in the rear.
