Yeah, whatever they were, they weren't as good. Maybe that's why the Gen II HIDs are just okay. I think you validated my point.

I think the GenII HIDs work great. If you guys feel the GenIII setup is better then I can't wait until I can upgrade the whole car! lol

Thanks for creating this thread. My LED foglight idea was a bust so I just ordered the 35w 5000k HID kit and new 5000k D2R bulbs to replace my factory HID headlights.

Dang...that was shortlived. Well, I'm looking forward to seeing the HIDs.

lol. Yeah I don't like the dual-filament setup anyway. The high beams suck.

Well i have no basis of comparison. HIDs were only available in the US.

The driver side LED that was giving me trouble is now only partially lit up. I wish I had known those HID kits were so inexpensive. I would have not bothered with the LEDs.

Which is exactly why I went for them over the LED. ^_^

While I have only owned a G3, I've driven a friends G2 a few times. The light output and pattern from the G3, IMO, is much better than the G2 HID. Plus, you get the extra bulb in the G3 for the High Beams.

If I recall, the G2 HID ultimately just had a reflector of sorts for the high beams. I noticed that they mostly moved the light upwards and there was less light on the road in front of you. Is my understanding of that correct?

I have debated upgrading the bling light fog lights to HID, but I think I'll wait until the OEM quality Fog Light kits come down in price for the G3, then I'll do the upgrade for both.

I bought a HID kid for my Harley over the summer and have yet to install it. It's got a regular halogen bulb for the high beam and the HID for low beam. A good compromise for the motorcycle, I think.

Yeah, the HIDs in the Gen 2 have a shield that's removed when the high beams are activated. I believe the bulb also physically points slightly upwards.

My 5000k arrived and I'll be installing them today along with the 5000k kit I bought for the foglights. Wish me luck!

I got the passenger side bulb in and wanted to test it out and compare it with the factory bulb. I'm not happy. :(

The factory bulb appears much more white and crisp than the new 5000k bulb!

The 5000k bulb definitely looks brighter but more yellow.
The OEM bulb looks less bright but bluer.

Which is odd and exactly opposite of what I'd expect. What brand 5000k bulb did you buy?

Ok, that's how the HID kit worked that I put in my 03 Civic a few years ago. At the time, I was younger and didn't know as much about HID and had the bulbs that looked purple. Had I known then, what I know now, I wouldn't have gone with those ones.

I think separate high beam bulbs are much better than the shield version.

    Nice avatar, bru. :)

T he pictures don't really show the difference between the bulbs. If I stick my hand in front of each headlight the difference is huge. It looks like the difference between a halogen and HID. Brightness is about the same.

I screwed up and purchased 2 sets of the 5000k bulbs so I'm going to call on Monday and see if they will allow me to swap the unopened bulbs and kit for the 6000k kit and bulbs. If not then I'm sure someone could use em.

Interestingly, the stock bulbs are of german make. I'm not sure if this has any influence on the color output of the bulbs but in the world of reef aquariums German bulbs tend to have a bluer output than their color temp rating would imply.

Regardless, I would not suggest the 5000k bulbs for the 2004-2005 Prius (D2R) unless you want a more yellowish light than factory.

Yeah you lose the high beam capability if you go with an aftermarket HID in an OEM 2nd Gen Prius headlight because the halogen version doesn't have the shield or the moving mechanism.

    I agree.

    I agree.

T he bulbs are from DDM Tuning. I also purchased their 35w Raptor 9006 kit for the foglights but I'm going to see if they will allow me to swap it for the 6000k kit so my lights are not mismatched.

I put their 5000k kit in my 2010 a couple weeks ago. I actually like it better than the 6000k color. I feel like the prior 6000k kit I had used (cheap, ebay unit) was brighter looking at the bulbs, but one bulb wasn't as bright as the other (a noticeable difference). It drove me nuts enough to where I gave in and got the DDM 5000k kit after all the reviews on here for them.

If nothing else, you should be able to simply purchase the bulbs separately for not much $$. I'd imagine the shipping both ways may be more expensive than just purchasing a separate set of bulbs. If these were regular halogen bulbs, I'd say that you'd have a spare set for when you need to replace the bulbs next. However, with HIDs that may be several years down the line!

I did indeed purchase bulbs only for the headlights. The "kit I purchased was for the foglights. :)

Unfortunately, I bought 2 sets of headlight bulbs so I'd like to swap one set to the 6000k bulbs. These things are so cheap that I'm not worried about keeping extra sets around as I will have the stock set anyway.

Yeah. Wick1ert, since the Gen II already has HIDs we just need the bulbs, not the kit.

F8L, do you have the link for the DDM bulbs you bought? I can't seem to find the bulbs alone. I'd like to see how much cheaper they really are compared to say a $60 pair of Phillips.
