The forum is glitching. I don't have an edit button on my post so I can't add Priusbull or mcmoyer right now. :(

What are the do's and don't's to joining this special club?
Is there a rule as to how you fill up? That is, must be done with a tank filled to the first click or can you top off ala Wayne Gerdes (top off to the top of the filler neck).

There is no warning that you are out of fuel except for the flashing low fuel indication. I ran out of gas after about 70 miles of driving once the low fuel indication came on.

All of the rules are listed on the first page. We do not condone filling to the top of the neck but it's not against the rules to do so. :)

    Thanks Justin,

I saw the rules on page 1. Since filling up wasn't mentioned, I figured I would ask. I didn't want to get disqualified for a technicality IF I ever get to 600 miles.:(

    Got it! ;)

The marks are leftover from some sticky tape from a first year test. A Scangauge II is a better solution. Due to a tire change to Sumitomo T4s, the distance is accurate and matches GPS and mile-marker metrics.

I reset the "B" tripmeter when the 'flash' begins confident there is 2.1 gallons remaining. In this case, I was taking a curve at 'Prius speed' when it went off so I knew there was more than 2.1 gallons remaining but no way to tell exactly:
    There was a calculated:
    • 2.1 - (84.5/72.5) = 0.93 gallons remaining
    • 67.4 miles before absolute out of gas, 692.4 miles (close to 700 miles)
There was ~1.242 gallons left in the tank. Enough to reach 700 miles if I carried a spare, gallon container. Close but not worth it.

We're in the mid-80s and the 90s are not far off so 700 miles is fairly easy from here until November.

Driving technique, during first 45 seconds, accelerate on traction battery and shift into "N". After 45 seconds, drive normally using cruise control to hold speed. Urban driving, choose routes that avoid highway speeds.

600 and counting. Pulse and glide on surface roads, super highway mode and DWL on highways. 2013 persona stock setup. Tire pressure at whatever the dealer set them. Have gone about 70 miles with the last pip blinking.

Update: filled up with 11.587 gallons after going another ~50 miles. Glad I didn't push for 700, not sure I would have made it

Sorry for the blurry pic. I took this on my fill up last night after i went to Toyota to get my Entune updated. I was trying to break into the 70's mpg tank but the dealer guy pump up the AC and dropped my MPG down when they are sitting in my car updating the Entune to 2.2.0 version.

No special driving technique, just P&G and try to stay in EV mode as much as i can.

    Miles = 602.3
Outside Temp = in the high 80's
    Tire Temp = 36psi front 34psi rear
Tank = 9.127gallon (drove an extra 35 miles after light blinking).

    Cutting it clooooose!

Figure that 10x the displayed mileage will have you filling up with 10.5 gallons (+/- 0.2 gallons), thus you could comfortably have driven 597 miles (on the top picture) or 601 miles (bottom picture) and used 10.5 gallons. Call it 600 miles using 10.5 gallons. To get to the extra 56.4 miles from 600 miles (at your displayed 60.1 mpg which is likely 56.4 mpg) would take 1.0 extra gallons. I would have predicted you would have needed 11.5 gallons to fill up. You took 11.6 gallons, so I would have estimated very closely.

11x your displayed value is when you are on fumes (or have already run out of gas) = 661 miles. Yikes, way too close for comfort for me!

    I made it! :)
Filled up with 10.336 gallons. I really only have Atlanta traffic to Thank for getting mileage like this, but I know I can do much better. If it wasn't for all the people congesting the roads, this would never be possible. ;) It has been in the mid 80's lately so it is getting a little toasty outside. I typically only use the A/C in the afternoons driving home on the lowest setting, no cruise control, and the tires are kept at the level recommended on the door.

This was my record milage from 2012 that I have a picture of, I am in northern indiana and this is the time of year where no heat and no ac. I drive mostly interstate each day so i generally try to get behind semis and use the pulse and glide. This is in my 2010 Gen 3, I run the tires at 40 all around. I ran about 50 miles once the gas gauge started flashing, didn't want to risk it since, again drive mostly highway. Per my fuelly log i put 10.5 gallons in so i could have probably gone another 30 miles before NEEDING to fillup. After this picture my next 2 fill ups were at 616 and 615. So I've done this numerous times :). Currently working on trying to tip the scales to 700.

    Hi folks!
Can't do this during the winter but here's my entry:

Note the crazy gas price (with my $.10 discount).
    I almost feel like a Californian :)

Yet another reason why I don't like to go to Chicago...besides visiting the in-laws. ;) I just agreed to run a race there in a month...so maybe we won't drive this time.
