Is this what happens to people who become Prius owners? Am I joining the largest group of anal retentive, mileage obsessed geeks in the known universe? Please tell me I'll enjoy the car for other reasons. After reading Car and Driver on the airplane last night, I started to sweat a little. I've dealt with the reality of giving up my 255HP Volvo and its smooth, sweet acceleration, along with all of the enjoyment it's provided for 3 1/2 years, hoping that the Prius would merit its own pleasures. Do I have to drive with concerns about wind shear, gas consumtion and braking presure in my head in order to have a good time? AARRRRRRRRRRRGH :cussing:

Get ready for it...it'll more than likely happen to you too!!! This car is fun to drive, sometimes I just jump on it and pass the slow rubber necking goofball in front of me or grab a spot in line to make sure I don't miss my turn. But I have to admit, as a Type-A to the core Monster SUV owner that my driving style, through no intent of my own, has changed with my prius. Not b/c you have to, but b/c you want to. You gain a previously unavailable insight into what your car is actually doing each and every moment and you feel a bit guilty if you're not optimizing your consumption. It's almost like a video game where MPG = points. I don't stare at the screen each and every minute, and after 3 months I look at it less and less each day, but my driving style has modified...for the better.

No, you don't have to become anal retentive--or start that way to enjoy this car. Maybe you won't find yourself doing all this or worrying about mpgs and smooth driving and anticipatory braking and such...if not, fine. Put up a post and say "remember me...I'm STILL not anal retentive". It might be the thing that make someone else uncertain become convince they too can drive a Prius. OTOH, if you do start playing the games, come back and fess up...I have, and I made a post almost identical in tone to yours about 6 months ago....I did change my driving, and I'm really happy about it.

My wife has enjoyed her Volvo S80 T6 for a couple of years now. She constantly wants to borrow my Prius because its cute and fun to drive. She pays little attention to mileage and just thinks its cool. She is anything but anal retentive about it.

Incidently, the Prius has MUCH more back seat leg room than the Volvo. She's borrowed it to drive real estate clients around for room and the coolness factor. I enjoy the thought of real estate agents getting away with a $21K Prius instead of a $45 to $65K car for their real estate work. Maybe their clients won't complain about too high of commission rates if the agent drives a Prius.

You'll enjoy it no matter how you drive it.
