I know exactly what you mean, it took me over a year to get to mine. What finally made me do it was realizing all the time the CEL is on from the known code, and it kept getting longer, I won't know if a new code is thrown. It was the same for me as Dino33ca says: three hours and a pair of 12" needle nose made it easy.
