I picked up a Toyota keyfob for my '08 Prius. Daytona Toyota offered it via Amazon ~$160, got here and it isn't a shell only. Although to be serious I wasn't actually worried about that.

The reason Daytona got my cash was my local dealer wanted $235 fob + $135 to cut the key and program the fob.

Good news, Home Depot cut the key, no charge since they didn't sell me the key. Nor did they have a Toyota fob either. Went home and perform the internet Prius Chicken Dance, with One Misstep.

My wife doesn't like not having a backup key (to pretty much anything). As it's her car ultimately I provided a solution. Thanks to the many postings I read through on PriusChat I achieved a positive result.

Local quote $370, end result $160 and both fobs work fine.

If you have AAA plus or higher membership, they'll reimburse you part of the money for the "lost key". Just got a put in a claim and submit the receipt

Hmm. I did this about 2 years ago for my 06 and paid about $90 for a new FOB on Amazon. I guess supply and demand......

Anyway, fast forward and now I also have an 08 Suzuki that only came with a key (no remote). Bought new remote for $29 on amazon (no FCC markings on back) and it wouldn't pair. Returned and bought a $15 used one on ebay and it paired the first time. The pairing instructions are actually printed in the owners manual. No secret handshake, chicken-dance, mumbo-jumbo internet sleuthing needed.

Remember to transfer over the chip from the fob. It's easy to overlook.
