The original settlers were from the Ulm region of Germany. They hold on to their heritage to this day, if you go there and speak German, probably 50% of the people will still understand you. As a Kid, I remember going there and there were places that didn't speak English. BTW there is a movie just released that supposedly took place in New Ulm, but was filmed in Winnipeg, "New in Town" I believe is the title.

My old stomping grounds, where I went to college. Built on a side of a 700-ft high hill, facing Lake Superior. Northeast is called East as far as the roads & neighborhoods go, since it's parallel to the lake. One winter they shut down main street, which runs straight downhill, moved in snow, and had downhill ski races thru town. There's a ski hill on the south side, within city limits. While in college I met an exchange student from Iceland, and she said being in Duluth was the first time she experienced -20'F temperatures. (Plus there's always a wind in Duluth being next to the world's largest lake). Connected by the St. Lawrence Seaway to the Atlantic Ocean, so we could see Lakers (big ships that sailed on the Great Lakes) and Salties (ocean-going ships) in the middle of the continent, filling up on coal, iron, or wheat. Lots of wheat went to the Soviet Union in those days, but I digress.
