Fuel cell forklifts have been around for some time, and that is a good fit a hydrogen powered fuel cell. No worry about emissions in an enclosed space, and refueling is faster and easier than a battery swap for places working 24 hours. Then getting hydrogen to a single site isn't as difficult, nor as expensive, as building hydrogen infrastructure for personal cars. It is still more expensive than propane, natural gas, or electricity.

Fuel cells have potential. The big hurdle is insisting on using hydrogen for the fuel. Plug in cars don't need charging infrastructure for many to make use of them as daily drivers. Hydrogen infrastructure is needed to sell cars if that is the fuel of choice, which is expensive, and the car companies pushing it really don't want to spend their own money building it.

Toyota, Honda, Hyundai, and any other car company pushing a FCEV that requires pure hydrogen to run. The fuel cell technology, PEM, they are invested in simply can't have an autoreformer bolted on to use other fuel sources. Impurities in the hydrogen can poison the fuel cell, so the incoming hydrogen will need to be cleaned first.

And then there's the noble gas engine developed by Joseph Papp. It was like an ordinary engine, except that there were no intake or exhaust valves, no traditional fuel.
