Abe to push green tech at COP21 talks

Abe will announce that Japan will reinforce research and development of “revolutionary technologies” that will balance the goals of preventing global warming and promoting economic growth, according to copies of drafts obtained by The Yomiuri Shimbun of his speeches for a summit meeting as well as other events for the 21st Conference of the Parties to the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21).

Abe aims to emphasize Japan’s intent to contribute to the prevention of global warming through the nation’s high-level technological capabilities, including next-generation batteries and the use of hydrogen as zero-emission energy.

The speeches will highlight Japan’s achievements in technological innovations, such as solar power generation and the development of cars powered by fuel cells.

“To realize cuts in carbon dioxide emissions while maintaining economic growth, it is essential to develop revolutionary technologies,” Abe plans to stress in his speeches.

The prime minister will also address some hurdles that need to be cleared for renewable energy resources like solar power, pointing to their weather-dependent output as well as the difficulty in storing the generated energy.

A passage in one of the drafts says the utilization of “hydrogen as energy is a technology that has potential to resolve the issues simultaneously.”

Abe will present his stance that the government will emphasize support for technological development in the field.

In practical terms, the prime minister will propose that electricity generated with renewable energy sources be used to produce and store hydrogen as an energy source, and that technology will advance to the point that the hydrogen can be transported.

The drafts suggest Abe will stress to the other participants his wish to enable stable energy supplies throughout the world while realizing cuts in carbon dioxide emissions.

As for next-generation batteries, a passage says that “Japan will increase the travel distance of electric vehicles by fivefold.”

The government supports the development of next-generation batteries, so Abe is saying that Japan will strive to improve their performance.
