The charge rate is also highly dependent on the cathode and anode chemistry as well as aspects of mechanical cell construction. I'm not sure about the details of the cells they are using.

Heat too is one of the big variables that robs battery capacity over time. And charging means heat. So the Accord's 6 kW charging success will turn on its battery cooling system. That system will be more crucial turning on how stable the battery chemistry is that the Accord uses .

What I just realized is that now that Honda has this plugin system that can run pure EV - it's likely they will upgrade their underwhelming plug in hybrid systems so they can give more bang to their other hybrids. This could be a really big win for the gen 3 insight.

Good point. I haven't seen any details of their battery temperature management system.

So what gives it a higher MPGe with 13 miles over the Fusion with 21 miles? Does it get better ICE MPG?

I think the insight is quite dead. It was based on the concept of going cheaper than a prius but almost as good of mileage. I don't think it will cut it with the prius c/aqua around. The Honda fit hybrid, not sold in America is better than the insight in many ways. An improved Honda hybrid system will help sell hybrid fits, civics, and accords. It will be a good thing if they get this right.

Assuming the Prius liftback will keep chugging along in sales for 10+ years, I think Honda may be one of the first to virtually copy the car with a full hybrid drivetrain. May see this in 5 or 6 years.

MPGe has to do with the efficiency of the EV system. It has nothing to do with ICE efficiency or range.

It just means that you go further on your KW when you are running EV. Most cars are pretty close - usually around 100 MPGe but the Accord is a little more efficient than most. The 2013 Leaf is basically the same.

Obviously the Energi would be in EV more often so for most people, it would still be cheaper to drive. But when the ICE efficiency is better, it will still be trip dependent. The differences are small but Honda will be best to 15 miles or so, then Energi will be good from 16-40, then Honda will be best again. We all know that highway the Accord is going to crush the Fusion in the real world.

So the Honda has a smaller pack, but can go further on it than if that same size pack were in the Ford? That makes sense now.

Would also add that mpge does not mean much unless accessories like HVAC and Stereo are also efficient.

Looks like the Volt is going to feel the heat from increased competition.
